Freshman Annie LeHardy of Hidden Valley scored a major victory Wednesday as she won the River Ridge District girls' cross country title and nearly led the Titans to an upset of Blacksburg for the team crown at Green Hill Park.

LeHardy pulled away from a three-way battle with Pulaski County's Sabrina Hall and Blacksburg's Laurel MacMillan to cover the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 46 seconds. Her time was only 21 seconds off the meet record set by Hidden Valley's Jennifer Beury in 2003.

Hall finished second in 19:02, followed by MacMillan in 19:18. Another Hidden Valley freshman, Haley Cutright, was three seconds behind MacMillan.

Blacksburg, ranked No. 1 in Group AA, finished with 35 points to 39 for Hidden Valley.

Pulaski County and Cave Spring also qualified for next week's Region IV meet in Danville.

"Our depth is what won it for us," Blacksburg coach James DeMarco said. "If it hadn't been for that, it easily could have been a loss for us. Hidden Valley ran great today."

The boys' race produced a familiar sight: the 1-2 finish of Blacksburg's Peter Dorrell and Cave Spring's Tim Smith.

Dorrell won in 15:37, with Smith second in 15:58. Barrett LeHardy of Hidden Valley was third in 16:10.

Blacksburg's 39 points won the boys' team title. Christiansburg (67) was second, followed by Cave Spring and Hidden Valley.

In other district meets:

n Kate Norbo finished 15 seconds ahead of her sister, Carter, to win the Western Valley District girls' title at Edmunds Park in South Boston.

E.C. Glass swept both team titles, with PH finishing second. The Patriots fell by one point to Glass in the girls' race.

Nathan Richards of E.C. Glass won the boys' title in 16:16. William Fleming senior Jon Clark was second in 17:06.

n Lord Botetourt's Zeke Hunsberger set a course record of 17:32 in the Blue Ridge District meet at William Byrd High School, while Byrd's Alisha Royal won the girls' race.

Byrd's boys and Alleghany's girls won the team titles.

Byrd's Caleb Kingery finished 36 seconds behind Hunsberger to claim second place, while Botetourt's Stephanie Spickard was 27 seconds behind Royal.

All four teams in each division advanced to next week's Region III meet in Forest.

n Radford's Nathan Brame and Glenvar's Megan Marsico won individual championships and led their respective teams to first-place finishes in the Three Rivers District meet at Giles High School.

Brame, the reigning Group A champion, covered the 3.0-mile course in 15:50, finishing 46 seconds ahead of Radford teammate Charles Mogen as the Bobcats took the top four individual spots.

Marsico's time of 18:27 was more than 2 minutes faster than second-place Casey Carroll of Auburn.

Radford, Floyd County and Giles advanced to the Region C boys' meet, while Giles and Radford will join Glenvar in the girls' regional.

n Manuel Echeagaray won the boys' championship by more than one minute and led Galax to its 17th Mountain Empire District team title in the last 19 years at the Southwest Virginia Training Facility in Hillsville.

Echeagaray's winning time was 16:44. Grayson County's Michael Davis placed second in 17:46.

Galax's team score of 21 was far ahead of runner-up Grayson County. Fort Chiswell also qualified for next week's Region C meet.

Marleigh Durham of Galax won the girls' meet in 21:34, good for a 33-second margin over runner-up Taylor Burton of Bland County.

Galax topped Grayson County and Bland County for the girls' team championship.

n Jefferson Forest swept the Seminole District boys' and girls' team titles on their home course at Wolf Branch Farm in Forest.

The Cavaliers posted a two-point margin over runner-up Brookville in the boys' race. The JF girls were 12 points ahead of second-place Brookville.

Jacob Arthur of Brookville and Laura Rapp of Heritage were the individual winners. Rapp's time of 19:16 was 42 seconds better than runner-up Janel Reeves of Brookville.

n Rockbridge County's boys placed third in the inaugural Southern Valley District meet at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, earning a berth in next week's Region III championships.

Fort Defiance won both team titles. Lucas Moffett of Stuarts Draft won the boys' race, while Whitney Fulk of Fort Defiance took the girls' crown.

The Rockbridge girls placed fifth.
