Pioneers come back

MAX MEADOWS -- Phillip Arnold threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as Fort Chiswell came back from a fourth-quarter deficit to score a 35-32 Mountain Empire District win over visiting Pocahontas on Friday night.

Chris Rodriguez ran for 193 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries for the Pioneers (1-5, 1-0) and caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Arnold.

Gavin Burnett had 66 yards on nine carries. Andrew Hamm and Bradley Robinson each caught a touchdown pass.

Arnold completed 4 of 11 passes for 95 yards, but was intercepted three times. He also ran for 51 yards on nine carries.

The Pioneers led 20-14 at halftime but fell behind 32-27 in the fourth quarter before Rodriguez led a final scoring drive for Fort Chiswell to pull out the win.

Zach Pauley ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for Pocahontas (3-4, 0-2).

Brandon Pauley completed 5 of 11 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 36 yards and another score on 10 carries.

Bassett 40, Tunstall 14

Rashawn Woods had 108 rushing yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns, and he threw for 127 yards, connecting on three touchdown passes to lead the Bengals to the Piedmont District victory.

Martin Scales added 112 yards rushing on 12 carries and one touchdown for Bassett, which only gave up 82 total yards of offense to the visiting Trojans.

Nathan Hepler ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns as Bath County pounded Pioneer District rival Craig County.

Dustin Bratton, John Barden, Adam Persinger, and Michael Robertson each scored a touchdown for the Chargers (3-4, 1-0).

Bath County rolled up 379 yards of total offense, all but 15 on the ground. Craig County (0-7, 0-1) had just 147 total yards.

BUCHANAN -- Oliver Surprenant accounted for three touchdowns as James River (5-2, 1-0) opened its Pioneer District schedule with a lopsided win over the Cougars.

Surprenant threw touchdown passes of 77 yards to Corey Ware and 10 yards to Tyler Kelly. He also ran for a score from 2 yards out.

Surprenant finished 10-for-14 passing for 211 yards with two interceptions.

Phillip Stewart, who scored two touchdowns, ran for 114 yards on 15 carries.

Ware caught three passes for 94 yards and a TD, while Kelly hauled in two passes for 58 yards and a TD. Kelly also kicked six extra points.

A.J. Heighter rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries for Covington (0-7, 0-1).

RUSTBURG -- The Mountaineers (6-1) got special teams and defensive touchdowns to help their cause against winless Rustburg (0-7).

Steven Holt returned a blocked punt 35 yards for Alleghany's first touchdown and DelMar Carroll wrapped up the Mountaineers' scoring with a 53-yard interception return. It was one of four turnovers forced by Alleghany's defense.

Timesland's leading quarterback Ryan Kessinger completed 16 of 20 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.

Brandon Ross, who was the receiver on the 56-yard TD pass, finished with five catches for 100 yards. Corey Pullin had 14 carries for 51 yards and a TD.

Cody Jones completed 11 of 23 pass attempts for 78 yards for Staunton River. Al Dillon had five catches for 54 yards.

Fuquan Goode ran for 31 yards and a score. Lavarta Tanner led the Minutemen in rushing with 44 yards on 14 carries.

Liberty led 20-7 at halftime, but could not score again.

Stacey Houston ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries for Brookville (5-3, 3-1).

Logan Thomas ran for 78 yards and two scores for the Bees.

Jon Woodall-Gainy and Derrrick Palmer each scored a touchdown. Woodall-Gainy and Tyler Snow each had 11 tackles as the Terriers (6-1) recorded their third shutout of the season and second in a row.

Zoller rushed for 129 yards on 11 carries for two touchdowns. He caught two passes for 69 yards, including a 39-yarder for a touchdown.

Cook was 6-of-8 passing for 121 yards and threw three touchdown passes.

Trent caught four passes for 85 yards and two scores.

Zoller, a linebacker, also scored on a 30-yard interception return.

Galax-Grayson postponed

Galax's game at Grayson County was postponed after Galax officials were informed Friday that a Galax football player has been diagnosed with MRSA, a bacterial skin infection.

The game will be played at 7 p.m. on Monday at Grayson County.

Galax principal Bill Sturgill and Galax athletic director Bill Sutherland said the game had to be pushed to Monday to give the school time to clean the football locker room and equipment.
