Giles defeats Blacksburg in 6 OTs
The Spartans and Bruins go all night, equaling a VHSL record set in 2002 by Salem and Brookville.
PEARISBURG -- Gavin Lee's 2-yard run in the sixth overtime capped a rally from a 23-point halftime deficit Friday night as Giles scored a 46-43 nondistrict victory over Blacksburg in the season opener for both teams.
The six overtimes tied a VHSL record set in 2002 by Brookville and Salem.
The game included nine field goals -- six by Blacksburg's Caleb Violette. Giles' Cody Journell tied the game late in the fourth quarter with a 54-yard field goal. He missed wide on a 57-yarder in the final seconds of regulation.
Violette's third field goal in overtime from 22 yards out put Blacksburg up 43-40.
Lee then scored on third down to give the Spartans (1-0) their third straight win over the Bruins (0-1).
Blacksburg led 23-0 at halftime after three field goals by Violette, a 72-yard touchdown run by Latrell Keys and a 74-yard TD pass from Trey Gresh to Greg Keys.
