VHSCA honors several A, AA Timesland players
Giles places four players on the Group A first team while Salem puts two on Group AA first team.
Seven Timesland players have been named first-team on both the Group AA and Group A football teams by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.
The Group AA first team includes two players from Salem -- guard Daniel Turk and linebacker Nick Spradlin -- along with Lord Botetourt offensive tackle Ben Ballard, Rockbridge County receiver Jeff Early, Jefferson Forest tight end Daniel Bryant, William Fleming defensive end Xavier Callaway and Blacksburg defensive lineman Ta Ramsey.
The Group A team is headed by four players from Giles -- offensive lineman Conan Cook, running back Nathan Tanner tight end Jared Brown and linebacker Billy Cook. Rural Retreat placed quarterback Matthew Heldreth and offensive lineman Scott Whitehead, while defensive lineman Derrick Patterson of Covington also made the first team.
Second-team choices in Group AA from Timesland include center John Fitzgibbons, offensive tackle Demario Martin and defensive end J.D. Tyree of Martinsville; defensive lineman Justin Woods of Bassett; linebacker Patrick Bannon of Rockbridge County; linebacker Tyler Holmes of Blacksburg, defensive back Jonathan Williams of Magna Vista and kicker Caleb Violette of Blacksburg.
In Group A, the second-team picks from Timesland schools were offensive lineman Jeremy Workman and kicker Cody Journell of Giles, defensive end Steve Garris of Grayson County, linebacker Corey Jessee of Bath County, linebacker Zayne Hamm of Fort Chiswell and defensive back A.J. Looney of Glenvar.
The Group AA coaches picked Richlands quarterback Justin McCracken and Louisa County running back Todd Shelton as co-offensive players of the year. Amherst County's Alonzo Poe was named defensive player of the year. Amherst County's Scott Abell (Division 4) and Richlands' Greg Mance (Division 3) were named coaches of the year.
Goochland running back D.J. Coles and Riverheads linebacker Will Painter were chosen Group A offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.
Goochland's Joe Fowler (Division 2) and Riverheads' Robert Casto (Division 1) were picked as coaches of the year.
