Salem and William Fleming each raced to early leads and easily won their respective games in the first round of the first annual Big Blue Winter Basketball tournament, a new girls basketball tournament hosted by William Fleming High School.
The Spartans and Colonels will face off today at 8 p.m. in the second semifinal, following Herndon and Millbrook at 6 p.m.
Salem ran out to a 10-1 lead on Bayside-Virginia Beach and never looked back on its way to a 64-49 win in the opening round of the tournament.
Fleming had an easier time, trouncing R.E. Lee-Springfield 69-15 in a game where the Colonels (6-4) allowed Lee (2-5) no points for more than 17 minutes, shutting out the Lancers for most of the second half.
Lee scored its six fourth-quarter points in the final 45 seconds.
The Spartans (5-2) led 22-9 after the first quarter and held the Marlins at bay through the final three quarters to earn a spot in the semifinals with a 64-49 win.
"I'm glad we had that big lead," Salem coach DeWayne Harrell said. "They're a good team, and they made a couple runs at us."
Those runs never caused the Spartans to get sweaty palms; when Bayside (2-4) cut the Salem lead to 10 early in the third quarter, Carlye Garst had enough of it and hit a 3-pointer to spark a 14-0 run that put the game out of reach for good.
Tay Taylor had eight of her game-high 25 points in the third frame, and the Spartans led by 18 when the quarter ended.
The Spartans had their outside game going as Garst and Maddie Price combined for five 3-pointers.
Taylor had two 3s of her own to force the defenses to cover her outside, allowing her the chance to drive for layups.
"We had a balanced attack," Harrell said. "Everybody was playing their roles. We were passing and finding the open shot. Things come out better when you play that way."
The Spartans played all 11 who dressed, and nine got significant minutes.
"I wanted to push the ball. We only have one ball out there but all five of the players want to shoot. As long as we're getting shots on offense I have no problem with them shooting," Harrell said.
The Spartans made shots, including six from behind the arc, and they also had a 34-22 edge rebounding.
"It was a good game for us," Harrell said.
Bayside was led by Takerra Parsons, a freshman guard who came off the bench to score 17 points. Katherine Thomas had 12 for the Marlins.
Fleming's victory was a matter of defense, said coach Champ Hubbard.
"We came to practice the day after Christmas ready to work," Hubbard said. "I went back to basics. We practiced hard on defense for two hours and 40 minutes of a three-hour practice."
The focus on defense showed as Fleming completely shut down Lee.
When players who don't see a lot of time on the court got a chance to show what they could do, Hubbard said their effort was admirable.
Amyrah Harrell was one who made the most of her minutes, scoring 14 to tie starters Antavai Stevens and Ryajae Anderson for the team lead.
"I liked the effort of the kids who haven't played much," Hubbard said. "They showed they want to be on the court."
Lee was led in scoring by Meghan Cox, who had seven points.
Millbrook 75, PH 42
Undefeated Millbrook-Winchester (10-0) earned an easy 75-42 quarterfinal win over Patrick Henry in the first game of the day.
The Patriots (5-2) were never able to mount a serious threat and were outscored by at least seven in every quarter.
Courtni Green led Millbrook with 28 points, making four 3-pointers and going 8-of-9 from the stripe.
Shakeia Salters led the Patriots with 14 points.
Millbrook shot 84 percent from the line, making 16 of 19 free throws to just 5 of 12 (42 percent) for the Patriots.
Patrick Henry will play Hayfield-Alexandria in the losers bracket today at 2 p.m. in the Fleming gym.
Herndon 59, Hayfield 36
Nine of Herndon's 10 players scored as Brianna Moses and Chloe Owens each tallied 11 to lead the Hornets (7-1).
Jenna Aschenbach had eight or Herndon.
Hayfield (1-6) was led by Nathalie Abulencia with a game-high 14 points.
