Tunstall remains champs
High schools
Tyler Mills (3-for-5) and Justin Thompson (3-for-4) joined Inman with three hits and two RBI apiece. Inman allowed one run on two hits while striking out 13. Tunstall (26-1), which previously won state titles in 1976, 1995 and 2004, scored in the first on a solo home run by Jacob Thompson.
The Trojans then scored four runs in the second and five in the third, sparked by a leadoff solo home run by Josh Lewis. Tunstall completed the scoring with seven runs in the fifth.
The win marked the most runs scored by one team (17) in the state championship game. It tied the most runs scored by two teams (18) and is the largest margin of victory in the state finals.
GROUP A BASEBALL
Randolph-Henry 6, Chatham 3: Tyler Napier belted a grand slam with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to give the Statesmen the title in Radford.
The Statesmen (22-5) won the crown for the second time in four years.
Napier's slam gave the Statesmen a 6-3 lead. It was his third hit of the game.
Wesley Francis of Chatham (19-5) had an RBI single in the fourth to extend the Cavaliers' lead to 3-0.
The Statesmen scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball.
GROUP AA SOFTBALL
Loudoun Valley 3, Dan River 0: Cassie McGaha pitched six perfect innings to lead the Vikings to the crown in Radford.
The Vikings (27-1) won the title for the second time in three years.
McGaha's bid for a perfect game ended when Gwen Turner of Dan River (24-4) led off the top of the seventh with a single to shallow left field. She was thrown out trying to steal. McGaha (19-1) faced the minimum 21 batters, striking out five and walking one.
Jennifer Everhart tripled and scored on Alyson Moyer's RBI single in the first. Amy Edmondson had an RBI single in the fourth and Malorie Weller added an RBI double in the fifth.
GROUP A SOFTBALL
Gate City 7, Chatham 4: Brittany Rogers had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Blue Devils to the title in Radford.
Gate City (27-2) won the crown for the second time in four years.
Courtney Dulaney and Kala Tipton each had an RBI single for the Blue Devils in the first. Gate City also scored in the inning on a passed ball and an error.
Chatham's Kristen Davis tripled and scored on an Erin Cobbs single in the fifth. Chatham cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth on Erin Anderson's RBI double and pitcher Dannielle Emerson's RBI single.
Gate City scored three runs in the top of the seventh. With two runners on, Emerson threw wildly to first after fielding a bunt. The ball rolled into the foul territory in right field, allowing both runners and the batter to score.
Raven Fuller of Chatham had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
GROUP A
BOYS' SOCCER
Clarke County 1, George Mason 0: Clay Ferrell scored in the first half to give the Eagles the championship in Radford.
Clarke County (14-2-1), which won the title for the second time in seven years, lost in the final the past two years.
GROUP AA
GIRLS' SOCCER
Stone Bridge 3, Courtland 0: Mary Jo Loos scored two goals to lead the Bulldogs to the title in Radford.
Sarah Carrisses also scored for Stone Bridge (15-3-4), which won the crown for the first time.
