Rexrode tosses no-hitter

Freshman Abbie Rexrode pitched her first no-hitter and struck out 13 Friday as James River stayed unbeaten in the Pioneer District with a 3-1 softball win over Craig County.

Kirby Richmond had an RBI triple in the second inning, and Claire Campbell added an insurance run with a single in the fifth for James River (12-2, 6-0). Josie Dillon gave up just seven hits and did not walk a batter for Craig County (7-4, 2-4), which got its run on a ground ball for Lauren Gardner.

Cave Spring 1, Blacksburg 0: The Knights' Jillian Sullivan allowed five hits and one walk in seven innings to best Emily Belote and the visiting Bruins in a River Ridge District matchup.

Sullivan fanned nine for Cave Spring (10-2, 6-0). Chelsea Kelley, who finished with two hits, drove in Jessica Boatright with the game's only run with a single in the fourth inning.

Monica Perdue doubled for Blacksburg (1-5 district). Belote took the loss despite allowing just five hits. She struck out one.

Roanoke Catholic 9, Carlisle 0: Katie Eldridge pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 as the Celtics stayed tied for first place in the Blue Ridge Conference with a victory over the Chiefs.

Katie Walters had two RBI for Catholic (13-2, 6-1). Eldridge and Mallory Weatherman each scored twice.

Fort Chiswell 10, Bland County 2: Amber Rankin went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Pioneers as they routed visiting Bland County to win the Mountain Empire District ballgame in Max Meadows.

Joanne Jennings and Kristin Webster each went 3-for-4 with an RBI to help Fort Chiswell's (8-6) offensive effort.

Christiansburg 1, Pulaski County 0: Christiana Sindelar hit a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning to drive in Rachel Garby, giving the Demons the River Ridge District win at home over the Cougars.

Hope Creasy pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out five for the Demons (11-4, 5-1). Ashley Clark also went the distance for Pulaski (8-8, 2-4) and was credited with a tough-luck loss on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out four.

Alleghany 3, William Byrd 1: Vickie Martin had a double and an RBI for Alleghany in the Mountaineers' Blue Ridge District win at William Byrd.

Jessi Allman pitched a four-hitter for the Mountaineers (13-1, 4-0). Lara Wise took the loss for the Terriers (6-9, 1-4), but pitched a complete game, striking out five and walking two. Brittany Sensabaugh drove in William Byrd's only run.

Galax 29, Narrows 2 (3 innings): The Maroon Tide scored 12 times in the second inning and added 13 more in the third to remain unbeaten in the Mountain Empire District. Beth Walker had a three-run home run for Galax (13-2, 7-0).

Glenvar 11, Eastern Montgomery 0 (5 innings): Kat Caldwell allowed just two hits and struck out six as Glenvar remained in first place in the Three Rivers District. Sara Armstrong was 2-for-4 with double and two RBI. EastMont (1-12, 1-5) got its two hits from Angela Brown and Lena Grant.

Auburn 7, Giles 2: Charissa Duncan had three hits, two stolen bases and scored twice as the Eagles (9-6, 5-2) won the Three Rivers District contest with the help of a four-run fifth inning. Nicole Layton allowed just four hits. Giles fell to 6-8, 2-4.

Hidden Valley 4, Salem 0: Megan Hall went 2-for-4 as the Titans took a River Ridge District shutout win at home over Salem.

Annie Lawrence added an RBI double and a sac bunt for Hidden Valley (9-5, 4-2).

BASEBALL

Radford 10, Floyd County 0, 5 innings: Radford baseball coach Wayne Pridgen gained his 200th win as the Bobcats blanked host Floyd County (0-14, 0-6) in a Three Rivers District game.

Chuck Crowder gained the win, permitting three hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out three. Matt Turner went 2-for-3 with a double for Radford (9-4, 6-1). Ben Benson clubbed a three-run home run.

Liberty 9, Jefferson Forest 0: Rich Glover fired a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Justin Overstreet hit two home runs as the Minutemen rolled to a Seminole District home win.

Overstreet had a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run shot in the second for Liberty (9-8, 5-4), which has won four of its past five games. The victory was No. 510 for longtime Liberty coach Jim Cutler.

Heritage 14, Staunton River 3, 5 innings: D.W. Moore went 4-for-4 with four RBI as the Pioneers held on to first place in the Seminole District with a win over the Golden Eagles (5-10, 2-8) in Moneta.

Jared Blankenship had three RBI for Heritage.

Glenvar 7, Eastern Montgomery 1: Corey Reynolds spun a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Highlanders improved to 5-0 in the Three Rivers District win a home win.

Jake Giardina had a single and a two-run home run in the third inning. Eastern Montgomery (8-7, 2-4) committed six errors.

Salem 8, Hidden Valley 6: The Spartans rallied to score seven runs with two outs in the sixth inning, and shut down the Titans with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh from closer Brett Demole to earn the River Ridge District win in Salem.

Salem's sixth inning was highlighted by a grand slam hit over the scoreboard by Nathan Furry, which gave the Spartans (9-5, 3-3) their first lead of the game. Furry added a double and had five RBI.

Daniel Gills hit a solo home run for Hidden Valley (6-8, 2-3), and Sam Brediger went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

James River 2, Craig County 1: Matt Cox broke a tie with an RBI double in the fifth as the Knights stayed in first place in the Pioneer District with a win in Buchanan.

Dustin Tingler (5-1) pitched a six-hitter and scored both runs for James River (9-7, 6-1). Caleb Dorton went 3-for-3 with an RBI double. Chris Nelson tripled and scored for Craig County (7-5, 3-3), while Brett Stamper had two hits. Losing pitcher Brandon Fisher allowed just five hits.

Cave Spring 14, Blacksburg 0, 5 innings: Robert Mills pitched a three-hitter for the visiting Knights, striking out six and earning the win on the mound as Cave Spring blanked the Bruins to take the River Ridge District win.

Danny Aiken went 2-for-3 for Cave Spring (10-5, 5-0), with two three-run home runs and six RBI. Barrett Henderson went 4-for-4 for the Knights with an RBI. The Bruins (5-9, 2-4) three hits came from three different batters.

Auburn 10, Giles 4: Auburn pulled away with a five-run seventh inning won the Three Rivers District contest with the help of just two hits at Pearisburg. C.J. Hamilton had a two-run home run for Auburn (8-6, 3-3). Daniel Sanders got the win. Ricky Cook took the loss for Giles (8-8, 2-4).

Roanoke Catholic 11, Lynchburg Christian 10: The Celtics scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to top the visiting Bulldogs in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Starting pitcher Michael Blanchard helped his own cause, going 2-for-2 from the plate and scoring four runs for Roanoke Catholic (8-12, 6-7 VIC).

George Washington 12, Franklin County 2, 5 innings: Rob Whitley pitched a six-hitter and GW scored nine runs in the fifth inning to clinch a tie for the Western Valley District title in Danville.

Reggie Keen had two hits and an RBI and scored three times for GW (15-1, 7-0). Corey Moore added two hits. Hunter Naff had a two-run single in the fifth for Franklin County (10-6, 1-4).

Lord Botetourt 8, Patrick Henry 7: Bobby Barton hit a double and knocked in two runs as the Cavaliers took the nondistrict win from host Patrick Henry.

The Cavs scored their eight runs in the first three innings off just four hits. Christian Leftwich had a double and three RBI as part of Patrick Henry's rally. Ryan Brady went 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Patriots (4-13).

Alleghany 11, William Byrd 10: Brandon Lomasney had two hits, including a three-run home run, and four RBI as the host Mountaineers took a Blue Ridge District win from the Terriers in Low Moor.

Aaron Hall added two singles and a double for Alleghany (11-3, 4-1), which held the lead throughout the entire ballgame. Brandon Chocklatte had two singles, a double, and an RBI for the Terriers (10-5, 3-2).

Northside 8, William Fleming 5: Dustin Young earned his first win of the season on the mound for Northside, going 6 innings, allowing three earned runs and six hits, and striking out five as the visiting Vikings downed the Colonels in a Blue Ridge District matchup.

Matthew Flora went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Northside (10-6, 4-1). Brandon Smith went 2-for-3 for William Fleming.

Grayson County 7, Bland County 3: Michael Durnovich's two-run triple sparked a three-run sixth inning as Blue Devils broke a 3-3 tie and went on to win the Mountain Empire District contest at Bland.

Justin Dunn was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Bears (6-4, 1-3).

Pulaski County 9, Christiansburg 8: Jonathan Hagee capped a four-run fifth inning with a two-RBI double as the Cougars (10-5-1, 4-2) came from behind to beat the Blue Demons in a River Ridge District game at Calfee Park.

Hagee finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Andrew Hart was 2-for-4 with a RBI and scored two runs.

Corey Graham and John Furrow were each 2-for-4 with two RBI for Christiansburg (6-10, 1-5).

TENNIS

Western Valley District: Two Patrick Henry doubles teams and one from Franklin County advanced to the semifinals of the Western Valley District tennis tournament in Lynchburg.

Bo Edwards and Blair Wilner of PH advanced in the boys' tournament along with Mike Sampson and Eric Smith of Franklin County.

Julie Shafer and Lauren Sharpley of PH made the girls' semifinals, which will be played Monday at 7 p.m. at E.C. Glass High School.

Edwards and Sampson reached the boys' singles semifinals, while Jaimie Clay and Isabel Hopkins of PH made the girls' semis on Thursday.

Edwards will face Sohaib Ahmed of George Washington in a semifinal at 5 p.m. Monday at E.C. Glass High School. Sampson will play GW's Jeff Gignac in the other boys' semifinal.

Clay will take on top-seeded Anne Day of Glass in Monday's semifinal, while Hopkins will play second-seeded Annie Gregoryev.

BOYS' SOCCER

Jefferson Forest 4, Liberty 0: Jim Rochow scored two goals and assisted on another as the Cavaliers (14-0, 10-0) blanked the Minutemen (6-5, 4-3) in a Seminoke District game in Forest.

Shea Kelly and Brendan Heisler also scored for Jefferson Forest, which outshot its guest 21-4 in the game.

Goalie Matt Harrison made four saves for the shutout.

Blacksburg 3, Cave Spring 0: Twins Tim Becker and Matt Becker scored goals, and Kevn Gregory added one as the Bruins stayed perfect in the River Ridge District with a home win.

Peyton Berkeley had five saves for Blacksburg (10-2, 6-0). Tyler Kerr made eight saves for Cave Spring (6-6, 2-4).

Northside 8, William Fleming 0: Hien Nguyen netted four goals and had one assist as the host Vikings shut out the Colonels (0-10-1, 0-5) for a Blue Ridge District win.

Jacob Preston added a goal and a pair of assists for Northside (7-3-2, 2-1-1), and Jeremy Theis and Corey Fobare each scored one goal and had one assist.

William Byrd 6, Alleghany 0: Omar Cook netted three goals as William Byrd took the Blue Ridge District shutout win at home over Alleghany (1-4 Blue Ridge).

Chris Collins added two goals and two assists for the Terriers (11-2, 5-0 Blue Ridge).

George Wythe 2, Glenvar 1: Thomas Crowgey netted both goals for George Wythe as the Maroons (8-2) downed the Highlanders in a nondistrict match in Wytheville.

Cameron Webb scored the only goal for Glenvar (7-5).

Pulaski County 2, Christiansburg 0: Chris Miller and Graham Owens scored second-half goals for the Cougars in a River Ridge District contest in Dublin. Zane Lineberry had 15 saves for Pulaski (6-5-1, 2-4). Christiansburg is winless in district play.

Hidden Valley 4, Salem 0: The Titans scored three times in the first half to take control of the River Ridge District contest at Salem High School. Brandon Lee, Kayvon Sarmadi, Matt Smith and Justin Richardson scored for Hidden Valley. Zach Agee had six saves for Salem (6-3-2, 3-3). Zach Agee had seven saves for Hidden Valley.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Cave Spring 2, Blacksburg 1: Rachel Beaumont scored with 2:30 remaining in the game to lift the Knights (10-0-2, 4-0-2) to the River Ridge District victory over the visiting Bruins (8-4-1 overall).

Katie Fanti gave Cave Spring a 1-0 lead, but Haley Rhodes scored to tie it at halftime.

Hidden Valley 2, Salem 2, OT: Meredith Grunewald had a goal and an assist for the Titans, but the visiting Spartans scored late to gain a River Ridge District tie.

Rachel Collie and Kendall Dishaw scored for Salem (8-3-2, 2-2-2). Jessica Welfare had the other goal for Hidden Valley (9-0-2, 4-0-2), which is tied with Cave Spring for first place.

Radford 2, Abingdon 1: Nikki Greco scored her second goal with less than two minutes to play and the Bobcats (11-0) won the battle of the unbeatens with a nondistrict win over the Falcons (7-1).

Radford goalkeeper Desiree Sommons and Abingdon keeper Lindsey Alderman had 21 saves apiece.

Lord Botetourt 2, Patrick Henry 0: Heather Sheriden scored both goals for the Cavaliers as they blanked the Patriots in a nondistrict game in Daleville.

Brittany Rogers recorded the shutout in front of the net for the Cavaliers (5-6-1), and Patrick Henry goalkeeper Emily Peters recorded 15 saves in front of her net.

William Byrd 5, Alleghany 0: Apryl Firebaugh had three goals and the Terriers shut out the Mountaineers (2-11, 0-4) for a Blue Ridge District road win.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Salem 14, New River 2: Katie Rotanz had four goals and one assist as the Spartans crushed New River (5-2, 2-2) in a River Ridge District game at Auburn High School.

Clara Williamson and Ryan Rotanz each added two goals for Salem (9-6, 6-0).

BOYS' LACROSSE

Patrick Henry 13, Cave Spring 2: Ryan Parker scored six goals for the Patriots as they took the nondistrict win at home from Cave Spring.

Thomas Dabay added three goals for the Patriots (9-2), and Guy Harbert helped out with four assists. Scott Watkins scored both goals for Cave Spring (5-6).

Bath County 23, Highland 3, 5 innings: Amber Harvey went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and five RBI as the Chargers took a Pioneer District win over Highland (0-5 Pioneer) in Monterey.

Monica Plecker went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and three RBI for Bath County (7-3, 4-1 Pioneer), and Kelly Hodge went 3-for-5 with five runs knocked in.

Michelle Colaw earned her first win this season, pitching a three-hitter, allowing two earned runs, walking one and striking out two.

Baseball

Covington 5, Parry McCluer 4: Jayme Persinger and Ben Wimmer each went 2-for-4 with an RBI as Covington as beat the Fighting Blues in a Pioneer District matchup in Buena Vista.

Parry McCluer (6-8-1, 3-3) failed to capitalize after loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, and used their last two outs on comebackers to Cougars (6-8, 4-2) hurler Jesse Forbes. Forbes scattered seven hits, walked one, and struck out one for the win.

Josh Lilly went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Fighting Blues.

Girls lacrosse

Rockbridge County 18, Fauquier 7: Colleen Evans and Eline Warren each scored four goals and had four assists as the Wildcats won a Jefferson District game in Warrenton.

Ella Wade, headed to Roanoke College next year, had five goals and an assist for Rockbridge (6-4, 3-1).
