Byrd's Wise throws no-hitter

Lara Wise pitched a no-hitter and was one batter away from a perfect game as William Byrd beat William Fleming 8-0 in a Blue Ridge District softball game in Vinton on Tuesday.

Wise struck out 15 batters for William Byrd (6-8, 1-3). She allowed a walk with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Miranda Carrasco went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Glenvar 4, Floyd County 3, 9 innings: Sarah Armstrong scored in the ninth inning to give the visiting Highlanders a Three Rivers District win.

Heather Farmer of Floyd County (7-4, 2-1) had a two-RBI base hit in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 3.

Hidden Valley 5, Blacksburg 4, 8 innnings: Megan Hall's RBI single in the top of the eighth lifted the visiting Titans to a River Ridge District win.

Shannon Sampson was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Hidden Valley (8-4, 3-1). Whitney Shaver had a two-run triple for the Bruins (4-7, 1-4).

Giles 9, Radford 8: Heather Tickle hit a walk-off triple in the bottom of the seventh to give the Spartans a Three Rivers District win in Pearisburg.

Radford scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 8.

Rachel Lucas went 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Spartans (6-7, 2-2). Lindsay Sowers went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Radford (2-8, 1-4).

Northside 6, Lord Botetourt 1: Lindsey Jarrett tossed a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks as the host Vikings won a Blue Ridge District game.

Jarrett went 3-for-3 for Northside (10-5, 3-1).

Auburn 14, Eastern Montgomery 9: Heather Bower went 2-for-2 and scored twice for the host Eagles (8-5, 4-1) in a Three Rivers District victory.

Ashley Harrison and Angela Brown each went 2-for-5 with one RBI for the Mustangs (1-11, 1-4).

Roanoke Catholic 8, Westover Academy 0: Katie Eldridge tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the visiting Celtics.

Mallory Weatherman went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Celtics (12-2, 5-1).

Cave Spring 2, Christiansburg 0: Jillian Sullivan pitched a three-hitter, striking out five, to lead the Knights (9-2, 5-0) over the Blue Demons (8-3, 3-1).

Mackenzie Meador had two hits and scored a run for the Knights.

Pulaski County 11, Salem 4: Heather Dunavant went 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lift the visiting Cougars to a River Ridge District win.

Jamie Price went 3-for-4 with one RBI for Salem (1-11, 0-4).

James River 15, Highland 1: Meggan Mitchell pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight and allowing no walks, as the Knights won a five-inning Pioneer District game in Buchanan.

Kayla Horton of James River (11-2, 5-0) had a triple and an inside-the-park home run.

Galax 22, Bland County 0: Sisters Beth and Amber Walker each hit a grand slam to help visiting Galax squash Bland County in a Mountain Empire District softball game Tuesday.

Beth Walker had two homers, including her grand slam, and seven RBI. She also earned her 12th win of the season on the mound for Galax (12-2, 5-0). She struck out nine of the 10 batters she faced as she combined with Bailey Snyder to no-hit the Bears.

Bath County 7, Covington 0: Amber Harvey pitched a four-hit shutout and hit a two-run homer as the visiting Chargers won a Pioneer District game.

Bonnie Randozzo ripped a three-run homer for Bath County (6-3, 3-1).

BASEBALL

Radford 7, Giles 5: Garrett Edwards and Matt Turner scored on back-to-back wild pitches in the bottom of the sixth to give the host Bobcats a Three Rivers District win.

Edwards had two hits for the Bobcats (8-3, 5-0).

C.J. Hamilton homered for Giles (8-7, 2-3) to tie the score at 5 in the top of the sixth. Hamilton belted two homers and had three RBI.

Glenvar 20, Floyd County 0: A.J. Looney pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out three and walking three, to lead the Highlanders to a Three Rivers District win over the Buffaloes (0-13, 0-5) in Salem.

Colten Herald of Glenvar (7-2, 3-0) was 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Pulaski County 8, Salem 0: Chris Eads had two hits and two RBI to lead the Cougars (9-5-1, 3-2) to a River Ridge District win in Dublin.

James River 10, Highland 0: Charlie Conner and Dustin Tingler each hit a two-run double during James River's 10-run fifth inning as the Knights (8-7, 5-1) won a five-inning Pioneer District game in Buchanan.

Blacksburg 7, Hidden Valley 5: Scott McKee had two RBI in the first inning to help the Bruins (5-8, 2-3) beat the host Titans in a River Ridge District game.

Brandon Lower led Hidden Valley (6-7, 2-2) with two hits and two RBI.

Cave Spring 16, Christiansburg 0: Barrett Henderson and Andrew Feldenzer combined for a five-inning, one-hit shutout as the Knights defeated the host Blue Demons (6-9, 1-4) in a River Ridge District game.

Robert Mills hit a three-run homer for Cave Spring (9-4, 4-0).

Halifax County 12, Patrick Henry 1: Jeremy Jeffress went 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead the visiting Comets to a Western Valley District win.

Adam Hart hit an RBI-double for the Patriots (4-11, 0-5).

Northside 14, Lord Botetourt 2: Matt Flora pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and went 4-for-4 with two RBI as the Vikings (9-6, 3-1) won a Blue Ridge District game in Daleville.

Alex Anduiza went 2-for-4 with one RBI for Lord Botetourt (8-4, 0-3).

Auburn 8, Eastern Montgomery 0: Chris Campbell pitched a two-hit shutout, walking one and striking out nine, to lead the Eagles to a Three Rivers District win over the Mustangs (8-6, 2-3) in Elliston.

Billy Stoffel went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Auburn (6-6, 1-3).

Fort Chiswell 6, Narrows 5: David Dickens went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer as the Pioneers handed the Green Wave its first Mountain Empire District loss.

Ryland Edwards went 2-for-3 with a solo home run for Fort Chiswell (4-12, 1-4). Brian Lucas of Narrows was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

James Monroe (W.Va.) 6-0, Bland County 4-6: Robert Faulkner fired a two-hitter and had a two-run single to help the Bears (5-3) earn a split of the nondistrict doubleheader in Bastian.

Covington 6, Bath County 2: Jayme Persinger had two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases to lead the Cougars (5-7, 3-2) to a Pioneer District win over the Chargers (4-9, 1-4).

Bassett 7, Martinsville 1: Ed Clark had three hits as the Bengals downed the host Bulldogs in a Piedmont District game.

Bassett (5-7, 2-3) scored six runs in the top of the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie.

Daniel Ray drove in the tying run for Martinsville in the bottom of the sixth.

Bassett 6, William Fleming 4: Travis Price had three hits as the Bengals defeated the host Colonels Monday night.

BOYS' SOCCER

Blacksburg 2, Hidden Valley 1: The visiting Bruins won the battle for first place in the River Ridge District when a Titans defender inadvertently deflected the ball into the Hidden Valley net with less than eight minutes left in the second half.

The own-goal lifted Blacksburg to 5-0 in district play. Tim Becker had the Bruins' first goal. Taylor Walsh netted the only goal for Hidden Valley (9-2, 4-1).

Cave Spring 5, Christiansburg 0: Sam Hyatt netted four goals as the Knights (6-5, 2-3) shut out the host Blue Demons in a River Ridge District match.

William Byrd 9, William Fleming 0: Chris Collins scored five goals to lead the Terriers (10-2, 4-0) to a Blue Ridge District win over the Colonels (0-9-1, 0-4) in Vinton.

Lord Botetourt 1, Northside 1, 2 OT: The visiting Cavaliers and Vikings swapped first-half goals in the Blue Ridge District tie.

Stephen Davis' goal gave the Vikings (6-3-2, 1-1-1) a 1-0 lead. Justin Stark recorded Lord Botetourt's goal.

George Wythe 9, Rural Retreat 2: Thomas and Aaron Crowgey each scored three goals as the Maroons (7-2, 5-0) defeated the host Indians in a Hogoheegee District game.

Scott Schilling scored both goals for Rural Retreat.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Hidden Valley 2, Blacksburg 0: Chelsea Patterson and Stephanie Hare scored as the visiting Titans (8-0-1, 3-0-1) won a River Ridge District match over the Bruins (7-2-1, 2-2).

North Cross 2, Covenant 0: Molly Steele scored two goals to lead the Raiders (13-2) over Covenant (6-8-1) in Charlottesville.

Roanoke Valley Christian 7, Roanoke Catholic 0: Maria King scored three goals to lead the host Eagles to a Virginia Independent Conference win.

McKenzee Poindexter scored twice for RVC (5-4, 3-4).

Lord Botetourt 1, Northside 1, 2 OT: The Cavaliers and Vikings swapped second-half goals in a Blue Ridge District tie in Daleville.

Brea Phillips scored for the Cavaliers (4-6-1, 2-0-1), and Alexi Staunton had Northside's goal.

Cave Spring 7, Christiansburg 0: Jennifer Harvey scored three goals as the host Knights (8-0-2, 3-0-2) won a River Ridge District game.

Faith Christian 0, Christian Heritage 0, 2 OT: Lauren Conrad of Faith Christian (3-5-2, 3-2-1) and Erica Keller of the Knights (5-2-1, 4-0-1) each had five saves in the VACA tie at River's Edge.

Salem 8, Pulaski County 0: Amanda Adams and Kendall Dishaw each scored three goals as the host Spartans (7-3-1, 2-2-1) outshot the Cougars 48-0 in a River Ridge District game.

Liberty 3, Staunton River 0: Hannah White, Caitlin Jenkins and Molly Weber scored to lead the Minettes (11-0-1, 7-0-1) to a Seminole District win over the Golden Eagles (3-8-1, 3-5-1) in Moneta.
