Hosey displays unique power

Ashley Hosey became the first James River softball player to clear the school's 225-foot fence with a home run Monday as she had seven RBI for the Knights in a 15-0 softball victory over Staunton River in five innings.

Hosey had three hits, including a three-run triple for James River (10-2). Freshman Abbie Rexrode pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Rexrode also had a three-run triple and drove in four runs. Shannon Austin had two hits and scored three times for the Knights.

Eastern Montgomery 13, Giles 10: Ashley Harrison went 4-for-5 with two runs scored as the visiting Mustangs got their first win by defeating the Three Rivers District rival Spartans.

Whitney Taylor added two hits for EastMont (1-11, 1-4). Hillary Meredith went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Giles (5-7, 1-3), while teammate Brittany Moye had two hits and four RBI.

Blacksburg 6, Salem 1: Emily Belote tossed a four-hitter, striking out five, as the host Bruins grabbed their first River Ridge District win.

Courtney Long went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Sarah Davis drove in two for Blacksburg (4-6, 1-3). Jessica Miller went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run for the Spartans (1-10, 0-4).

BASEBALL

Alleghany 8-6, Northside 0-5: Robbie Andrews pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight as the Mountaineers took a Blue Ridge District win in the first game of a doubleheader at home.

Matt Ballinger had two hits and two RBI, including a solo home run for Alleghany. Michael Lloyd had two hits for Northside.

The teams played a five-inning nondistrict game in the nightcap as Steven Keener's walk-off single capped a two-run rally. Anthony Lowry tied the game with a single for Alleghany (10-2, 3-1). Northside (8-6, 2-1) had gone ahead 5-4 on an RBI-double by Andrew Stover.

Salem 6, Blacksburg 3: Ben Cassell tossed a six-hitter, allowing no earned runs and striking out nine, as the Spartans won a River Ridge District game at Kiwanis Field.

D.K. Staton was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer for Salem (8-4, 2-2). Brandon Dove was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bruins (4-8, 1-3).

Chilhowie 12, Patrick Henry-Glade Spring 5: Justin Rouse went 3-for-4 with four RBI as the Warriors won a Hogoheegee District game at home.

Jared Pierce also went 3-for-4 for Chilhowie (7-6, 4-4), while Justin Miller pitched four innings for the win. Travis Brown had three hits to lead the Rebels.

GIRLS' SOCCER

North Cross 8, Timberlake Christian 1: Molly Steele had three goals and two assists to lead the host Raiders to a Blue Ridge Conference victory.

Jane Gray added two goals for North Cross (12-2, 9-0).

SWHS 2, Faith Christian 1 (shootout): Meredith Campbell scored the lone goal for the Conquerers (6-2) in regulation, and SWHS won the shootout 3-1 at River's Edge.

Meredith Jones scored in regulation for Faith Christian.

Northside 8, Alleghany 0: Amber Henschel and Alexi Staton each had two goals as the Vikings (4-7, 2-0) won a Blue Ridge District game in Low Moor.

Kayla Lee had 17 saves for Alleghany (2-10, 0-2).

Liberty 1, Amherst County 0: Leigh-Anne Zylstra scored with 19 minutes remaining as the host Minettes (10-0-1, 6-0-1) won a Seminole District game.

Glenvar 2, Floyd County 1, OT: Kelsey Walters scored from the right side in the second overtime period to lift the Highlanders over the Buffaloes in Floyd.

Makayla Nash also scored for Glenvar (8-2, 1-1). Abby Goorsky had the goal for Floyd (3-7, 0-2).

Martinsville 3, Magna Vista 1: Lauren Welch and Olivia Karavatakis each had a goal and an assist as the Bulldogs won a Piedmont District game at home.

Mary Dorothy Fain also scored for Martinsville (6-4, 6-0). Amy Kanode scored for the Warriors.

Chatham Hall 3, Roanoke Catholic 0: Madalyn Crowell scored two goals as Chatham Hall (4-2-0, 4-2-0) topped the host Celtics (5-5-2, 2-5) in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

BOYS' SOCCER

Riverheads 2, North Cross 0: Andrew Knopp scored twice in the final 20 minutes as the visiting Gladiators (9-0) topped the Raiders (9-5-1).

Glenvar 5, Floyd County 0: Jason Gliniecki scored a hat trick as the Highlanders won a Three Rivers District game over the Buffaloes (4-4-1, 2-2-1) in Salem.

Cameron Webb added a goal and three assists for Glenvar (6-4, 4-0).

Northside 7, Alleghany 0: Jeremy Martin scored two goals, while Chris Joyner had a goal and two assists in a Blue Ridge District home win for the Vikings.

Jeremy Theis had two assists for Northside (6-3-1, 2-1). Stephen Davis and Tyler Parks had their first career goals for the Vikings.

Jefferson Forest 3, Cave Spring 1: Jacob Peterson scored twice and Jim Rochow added a third goal as the Cavaliers stayed unbeaten with a road win.

Gavin Eastlack had two assists for Jefferson Forest (12-0). Sam Hiatt scored for Cave Spring (5-5).

Radford 4, Giles 0: Jason Ryan and Erik Amy scored two goals apiece as the Bobcats won a Three Rivers District game in Radford.

Andrew Weyer had eight saves for Radford (6-4-2, 4-1), which trails Glenvar by one game in the district standings.

Roanoke Catholic 2, Fishburne Military School 2, OT: Jeremy Van Deventer and Chris Joachim scored for the Celtics (2-9-4) in a draw at home against the Caissons.

Martinsville 3, Magna Vista 1: Brice Ashby, Tyler Bassett and Brent Collins scored as the Bulldogs (6-3-2, 4-1-1) won a Piedmont District game at home.

Francisco Garcia scored for the Warriors (6-3, 4-2).

Bassett 6, Dan River 0: Jorge Rios scored three goals as the Bengals stayed tied atop the Piedmont District with a win over Dan River (0-11, 0-6) at home.

Jonathan Pace, Jonathan Milton and Fernando Gonzales also scored for Bassett (6-4-2, 4-1-1).

BOYS' TENNIS

E.C. Glass 5, Patrick Henry 4: Glass' No.2 doubles team of Bobby Laverty and Jay Hanna defeated Ajee Elliott and Coleman Davis 6-2, 6-2 in the deciding match as the Hilltoppers won the Western Valley District and clinched a home match in the Northwest Region.

The Patriots (7-6) will meet the Cedar Run District champion on the road in their first-round regional match.
