Titans' defense stymies Vikings

Hidden Valley amasses 239 total yards while holding Northside to 41.

Special to The Roanoke Times

The Hidden Valley Titans had little trouble with Northside Friday night, attacking the Vikings through the air and on the ground in the first half on the way to a 21-0 non-conference win.

Northside went to 0-5 on the season while Hidden Valley improved to 3-1.

"Defensively I thought we came back [in the second half]," said Vikings coach Jim Hickam. "Offensively we still are trying to find something that clicks."

Hidden Valley had 239 total yards while holding Northside to 41.

Judd Carte hauled in a 39-yard pass from Tyler Coyer to give the Titans a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game. "We came out together and played as a team," said Carte, who had high praise for an offensive line that gave Coyer the time to find him downfield three times for 70 yards in the first half.

Hidden Valley started the second quarter in much the same fashion, as tailback Jimmy King shed would-be Viking tacklers en route to a 34-yard run and a 14-0 lead on the first play.

"My teammates made big plays for me, big blocks," said King, who finished with 102 yards on 17 carries.

King was the safety valve receiver on the next Hidden Valley possession and caught a 2-yard pass from Coyer after he was flushed from the pocket with 8:34 left to play for a 21-0 Titans edge.

Neither team scored in the second half, with six penalties and a Coyer interception slowing the Titans. Hidden Valley had only two first downs after halftime - eight overall - but held Northside to none.

"We couldn't get in the groove and the momentum changed," said King of the second half, "but our defense kept it together."

King's play in the defensive backfield was one reason that Northside quarterback Grandin VanMarter was 0-for-4 on pass attempts in the second half and 2-for-9 for five yards overall. In fact neither team had a yard through the air in the second half.

"We made some changes at halftime [on defense] that might have helped us a little bit," said Hickam of the Viking's second half shutout.

Northside's recent switch on offense to the I formation has been slowed by rainy weather that curtailed much-needed practice. The Vikings had just two first downs.

"Offensively we just have to [improve] next week," Hickam added.

"I'm real happy offensively and defensively," said Titans coach J.R. Edwards. "We finally generated some offense in the first half and then our defense stepped up and had a phenomenal game."
