Davis' goal assures Giles soccer victory
RADFORD -- Bobby Davis' goal with five minutes remaining broke a 1-1 tie and assured Giles a place in Friday's soccer tournament final with a 2-1 victory over Floyd County on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, a goal by Evan Lidgard put the Spartans up briefly before Faris Hensley tied things up for the Buffaloes and set up Davis' game winner.
Giles will face Radford in the final.
BOYS' SOCCER
Radford 9, Glenvar 1
RADFORD -- Jason Ryan drove in three goals to go with two assists to lead the Bobcats (12-4) past the Highlanders (1-13-3) and into Friday's Three Rivers District finals to face Giles.
Lukas Findley added a goal and an assist for Radford while Corey Terrell notched the lone goal for Glenvar.
Northside 3, Lord Botetourt 0
Bruce Spurlock broke up a scoreless game with one minute remaining in the first period to put the Vikings (6-9-2) up 1-0 at the half as they coasted to a Blue Ridge District semifinal win.
Northside then poured it on in the second with two early goals from Philip Motes and Richard White to shut down the Cavaliers (6-8-2).
The Vikings move on to face William Byrd in the finals.
William Byrd 2, Alleghany 0
Two first half goals from Chris Collins was all the Terriers (15-1-1) would need as a strong defensive effort blanked the Mountaineers (10-6-2) in the Blue Ridge District.
William Byrd's next challenge rests with Northside in Thursday's final.
Jefferson Forest 5, Liberty 0
RUSTBURG -- Jim Rochow scored three goals and goalie Scott Zaring had the shutout -- though Jefferson Forest (17-0-1) didn't allow a single shot on net in its Seminole District semifinal victory over Liberty (10-7-1).
GIRLS' SOCCER
Glenvar 3, Floyd County 1
GLENVAR -- Kelsey Walters struck early for the Highlanders to give the team a lead it'd never relinquish in the semifinals of the Three Rivers District tourney.
A goal by Morgan Lazenby put Glenvar up 2-0 at halftime before Lulu Barber scored midway through the second period to draw the Buffaloes within striking distance.
However, a second goal by Lazenby late in the contest ensured her team of a berth in the finals against Radford.
Radford 9, Giles 0
GLENVAR -- Krista Pattison tallied two goals and four assists as the Bobcats (14-1) used a 7-0 lead at the half to cruise through the opening round of the Three Rivers District tourney.
Nicky Greco added a pair of goals for Radford.
Northside 8, Alleghany 0
Molly Deacon had three goals and Alexi Staton had two goals and two assists as the Vikings (10-6) won their Blue Ridge District tournament opener.
Amanda Akers had three saves in the shutout. Northside outshot Alleghany 29-4.
Lord Botetourt 2, William Byrd 0
After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers (7-10) got a pair of goals from Kelsea Meador and Cathy Wright to topple the Terriers.
Ashley Russel got the shutout for Lord Botetourt. The team advances to face Northside in the district finals.
Martinsville 5, Bassett 3
BASSETT -- Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Bulldogs (11-4-1) reeled off four unanswered goals to start the second period and clinch a berth in the Piedmont District finals.
Dianna VanNutt led Martinsville with a hat trick while Catherine Eanes and Natalie Evans added a solo goal each. Liz Teague tallied all three goals for the Bengals.
Liberty 4, Heritage 0
AMHERST -- Katie Doering found the back of the net twice and dished out one assist to lead Liberty (14-3-1) over the Pioneers (11-6-1).
Hanna White added a pair of assists and a goal for Liberty as the team advances to the finals of the Seminole District tournament.
BASEBALL
Appomattox 6, Rustburg 5
MONETA -- Teddy Burks singled in the bottom of the eighth inning, stole second and third base and scored on a Corey Harvey single to lead Appomattox (10-5) over Rustburg (5-11) in the Seminole District tournament semifinals.
Justin Franklin led Appomattox with two hits. Rusty Brown collected three RBIs for the Devils. Appomattox will play Liberty at 7 p.m. at Staunton River High School for the district title.
Liberty 9, Jefferson Forest 4
Caleb Tomlin went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Minutemen past Jefferson Forest in the Seminole District semifinals.
Kevin Carimi also helped Liberty cruise by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Chilhowie 7, Northwood 6, 10 innings
CHILHOWIE -- Chase King's suicide squeeze with nobody out in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Jared Surber and Chilhowie advanced to the Hogoheegee semifinals in a marathon.
Besides the winning run, all six runs for each team came in the first four innings. Keith Fenner threw six no-hit innings for Chilhowie (13-7-2) in relief, taking the Warriors into the 10th.
Suber, who had three hits and an RBI, pitched a scoreless 10th and got the win. Chilhowie plays John Battle in the second district semifinal at George Wythe.
SOFTBALL
James River 9, Bath County 0
BUCHANAN -- Abbie Rexrode tossed a perfect game with 12 strikeouts to push the Knights (16-5) past the Chargers (6-13) in Pioneer District tournament play.
Greer Sullivan drove in two runs on a 2-for-4 night at the plate for James River who will face Craig County in the finals.
Craig County 6, Parry McCluer 1
BUCHANAN -- Josie Dillon scattered seven hits in a complete game as Craig County (11-4) beat Parry McCluer to advance to the Pioneer District tournament championship. Olivia LaPrad collected three RBIs and Lauren Gardner added two for the Rockets.
Emily Fix highlighted Parry McCluer's exit from the tournament; she batted an impressive 3-for-4 for the Fighting Blues.
TENNIS
Northwest Region
LYNCHBURG -- Patrick Henry's Bo Edwards and Chris Hincker each advanced in singles and doubles at E.C. Glass.
Edwards beat Albermarle's J.J. Pruitt 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the quarterfinals before edging Forest Park's Doug Robertson 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. Hincker beat Massaponax's Marshall Clark 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Fauquier's Bobby Powers 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Teaming together, Edwards and Hincker beat brothers Bruce and Tyler Kitchens, of Colonial Forge, 6-0, 6-3.
Play resumes at 10 a.m. today.
Blue Ridge District
William Byrd took care of business in the singles matches and denied Alleghany of a third straight Blue Ridge District team title with a 5-1 win.
In three of the six matches, one of the sets went to a tiebreaker and the Terriers won all three of those sets.
Both Byrd and Mountaineers advance to the Region III tournament. The district doubles title also was decided Wednesday when Byrd's Phillip Reynolds and Nathan Wilson beat Kilian Wust and Justin Tentecost of Northside in straight sets.
The singles semifinals and finals will be played today. The final four consist of Reynolds, Wust, Shreve and Matt Lyle of Lord Botetourt.
Mountain Empire District
BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Narrows' Kellie Hutchinson defeated Samantha Ray of Galax 6-0, 6-1 to win the Mountain Empire District girls' singles championship at Fincastle Country Club. The Grayson County team of Ashley Cooper and Sarah Bonham won the doubles crown by defeating the Galax team of Ray and Piper Cauldell 6-2, 6-4. Both champions advance to the Region C tournament next week.
