Northside earns girls' tennis title
Roundup
Camper knocked off Katie Sloan 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles as Northside took a 4-2 lead into the doubles. Pope and Adrienne Lester iced the match and berth into the Region III tournament with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Zoe McDowell and Katy Robb. Sloan and Betsy Richmond defeated Camper and Julia Echols 6-4, 6-2 to claim the Blue Ridge doubles title.
BOYS' TENNIS
Northwest Region: Patrick Henry's Bo Edwards captured the singles championship and teamed with Blair Wilner to win the doubles title in the Northwest Region tennis tournament at Albemarle High School in Charlottesville.
Edwards became PH's third straight singles title-holder with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Osbourn's Matt Krawczyk, earning the region's No.1 seed in the Group AAA championships.
Edwards and Wilner became the fifth PH tandem to win the regional doubles crown with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Albemarle's Theo Karen and Alan Shih.
Blue Ridge District: Alleghany won the team championship, while Phillip Reynolds of William Byrd won the singles championship and teamed with Nathan Wilson to capture the doubles title in Low Moor.
Alleghany defeated Byrd 5-1 as Seth Shreve, Orlo Yeagley, Mark Casstevens and Ben Hepler won in straight sets.
Reynolds topped Bert Hepler 6-0, 6-2 to claim the singles title. Reynolds and Wilson edged Yeagley and Casstevens 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the doubles final.
SOFTBALL
Three Rivers District: Tara Hall went 3-for-3 and had four RBI for Floyd County as it defeated Auburn 10-1 in a district semifinal game in Floyd.
Stephine Link pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight for the Buffaloes (14-5). Allie Bergen added two hits and scored four runs.
• Meredith Buckley struck out 12 and allowed one hit leading Glenvar to a 7-0 win over Radford in a semifinal matchup in Floyd.
Sarah Armstrong hit a two-run triple for the Highlanders (12-8). Kelly Knobel added two hits and scored a run and Carmen Hull had a two-RBI triple for Glenvar.
Hogoheegee District: Duwana Poore pitched a six-hitter and also had three hits and two RBI as PH-Glade Spring dumped regular-season champion Northwood 7-1 in the tournament final in Saltville.
Western Valley District: Jessica Morris fired a three-hitter as Halifax County ended Patrick Henry's season and the career of head coach John Griffith with a 7-0 victory in the final in South Boston.
Amanda Battin had two hits for PH (10-10). Griffith, PH's head coach for the past five years, said after the game he was ending a 29-year career during which he was a head coach in six different sports.
BOYS' SOCCER
Western Valley District: West Berry and Scott McCauley each scored a goal as E.C. Glass avenged a regular-season loss to Patrick Henry with a 2-0 victory in the championship match.
PH (6-9-2) got 17 saves from Wade Taylor.
Three Rivers District: Jason Ryan hit a game-winning penalty kick in overtime to lift Radford over Glenvar 3-2 in the championship in Pearisburg.
Jason Lewis scored two goals for the Bobcats (11-4-2). Jason Gliniecki and Leo Siebert each scored a goal for the Highlanders (9-7-1).
Hogoheegee District: Aaron Crowgey and Thomas Crowgey each had two goals for George Wythe who won the district championship over Rural Retreat 7-2 in Wytheville.
Jarryed Etter, Chris Grubb and Mark Lilly added one goal apiece for the Maroons. Scott Shilling scored both of the goals for the Indians.
Southwest District: The Cavaliers got two goals from Jason Bachara to down the G-Men 3-2 in championship.
Jose Moreno added a goal for Carroll County (12-6). They earned a bye into next week's Regional IV playoffs.
Jimmy Prieto and Frank Tumbokon scored each for Graham (12-6-1).
GIRLS' SOCCER
Western Valley District: Kristen Kenny scored both goals and E.C. Glass claimed the title with a 2-0 win over Franklin County in Lynchburg.
Three Rivers District:The district player of the year, Meg Khandan Barani, scored a hat trick for undefeated Radford as they beat Glenvar 5-1 for the title in Salem.
Nikki Greco and Tayler Shull each had a goal for the Bobcats (15-0). Arin Looney scored the Highlanders' (12-4) goal.
Piedmont District:After four scoreless overtimes, Magna Vista finally dropped Martinsville (12-5) at Bassett 1-0 in the district championship.
In the final 5-4 shoot-out Amy Kanode kicked the goal to send the Warriors on to the Region IV tournament.
BOYS' LACROSSE
Jefferson District: Salem dropped Charlottesville 15-4 at Western Albermarle.
The Spartans (11-2) were led by Will Sutterfield who had six goals and one assist. Jed Lynch had two goals and an assist as well.
Nico Tamm scored the opening goal for Charlottesville.
GIRLS' LACROSSE
Jefferson District:Rockbridge County squeaked by Charlottesville 9-8 in the final seconds.
Colleen Evans scored her fourth goal of the day for the Wildcats (7-5) with the game tied and eight seconds on the clock from a Rebekah Wager assist. Eline Warren had two goals and an assist and goalkeeper Maddi Coleman had 13 saves.
Charlottesville was led by Maggie Zentgraf with four goals and an assist.
BASEBALL
Mountain Empire District:
Shane Burris had hit a single and a double for three RBI in as many at bats as Grayson County defeated Narrows 13-1 in the championship game in Independence.
Shannon Webb also had a three RBI-double for the Blue Devils. The lone run for Narrows (6-9) came on an RBI by Cliffy Taylor in the third inning.
George Wythe claimed a berth in the Region C tournament as Trey Smith led a dramatic 11-5 victory in 10 innings over Lebanon in a Hogoheegee District semifinal in Bristol.
Dusty Crigger and had two-run singles in the 10th as Wythe broke a 5-5 tie. Smith performed an iron-man feat on the mound, throwing 171 pitches and striking out 16.
In the final, Wythe will face John Battle, an 11-1 winner over Chilhowie in five innings.
