Bobcats take tennis titles

Briton Camphouse extended Radford's run of Three Rivers District girls' singles championships Monday when she defeated Hannah Johnson of Giles 6-2, 6-4 in the final at Eastern Montgomery High School.

The doubles tournament will be held today at EastMont.

River Ridge District: Top-seeded Loy Campbell of Blacksburg and third-seeded Maria Migliarese of Hidden Valley reached the singles final at Virginia Tech.

Campbell advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Salem's Laura Koss. Migliarese upset second-seeded Shari Thornton of Cave Spring 6-1, 6-0 in the other semifinal.

Campbell and Migliarese will play for the title and a berth in the Region III tournament at 2:30 p.m. today. The match originally was scheduled for Wednesday.

BOYS' TENNIS

Three Rivers District: Radford's William Hwang rolled to the singles title with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bryan Higgs of Giles at Radford High School.

River Ridge District: Blacksburg's Pablo Farkas and Hidden Valley's Andrew Tuttle will play for the singles title after posting victories at Virginia Tech.

Farkas ousted Adam Nielander of Cave Spring 6-2, 6-1, while Tuttle won 6-4, 6-1 over Christiansburg's Tyler Griffith.

The championship match is at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Blue Ridge District: Lindsey Jarrett pitched a five-hitter and went 3-for-4 to lead Northside to a 3-1 victory over Alleghany in a playoff game in Daleville that decided the league's regular-season title.

Jarrett (15-5) struck out 15 for the Vikings, who broke a 1-1 tie on Kalyn Thornburg's RBI single in the second inning. Thornburg also pegged out a runner at third base in the fourth that killed a Mountaineers threat.

Jessi Allman went the distance for Alleghany, allowing nine hits.

Northside, which has won seven straight Blue Ridge regular-season titles, will face today's William Fleming-William Byrd winner in Wednesday's 2 p.m. league tournament semifinal at Northside. Alleghany will play Lord Botetourt in the 5:30 p.m. semifinal.

Piedmont District: Allison Hall doubled home Emerald Worley and Kristina Blake in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Patrick County (9-10) to a 5-4 victory over Magna Vista in a first-round game.

Magna Vista's Hope Campbell had doubled home two runs in the top of the inning to break a 2-2 tie.

• Kately Ison had a triple and scored twice, and Lindsay Hall hit a bases-loaded double to break things open as Bassett beat Martinsville 9-2 in a first-round game.

Hogoheegee District: Ashley Hodge went 4-for-5 to lead George Wythe to a 16-8 victory over Lebanon in the first round.

Britta Groseclose had three hits, two runs and two RBI for the Maroons (11-8), and Jessica Blessing added two hits and four RBI.

Pioneer District: Samantha Craft singled home two runs in the top of the 10th inning, and visiting Craig County held on for a 4-3 first-round victory over Covington.

The Cougars' Crystal Arritt doubled home a run in the bottom of the 10th but was stranded.

• Wendy Pifer twirled a one-hit shutout as Parry McCluer routed Highland 12-0 in a first-round game in Buena Vista.

The Rams' only hit was a single by Katie Perdue in the first inning.

Brooke McCormick and Teryn Mohler each knocked in two runs for the Fighting Blues (8-8).

Mountain Empire District: Galax and Grayson County rolled to easy first-round victories at Mountain View Field in Galax and will square off in Wednesday's title game.

Beth Walker stuck out 13 hitters and went 3-for-4 with four RBI, leading Galax to a 17-0 victory over Bland County in a semifinal game shortened to five innings. Loren Shanks added three hits and two RBI for Galax (16-3).

Samantha Nelson pitched a four-hitter and Carlie Osborne had a pair of hits to fuel Grayson County to a 10-2 rout of Fort Chiswell.

BASEBALL

Blue Ridge District: Alex Anduiza hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to help lift Lord Botetourt to a 15-5 first-round win over host William Fleming.

Mike Tyree went 4-for-5 with a double for the Cavaliers (11-8, 2-7), and Bobby Barton went 3-for-3. Lord Botetourt advances to take on Alleghany at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

River Ridge District: Pulaski County starter Zach Phillips struck out 13 batters and limited Blacksburg to just four hits as the Cougars earned the 3-1, first-round win at home.

Andrew Hart and Tony Hamblin hit back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs in the fifth for Pulaski County (12-8-1, 6-5), which will take on Cave Spring in the semifinals on Wednesday.

• Bryan Moore had three hits and four RBI as Hidden Valley (11-10) defeated Christiansburg 18-8 in the first round at Kiwanis Field.

Zach Helgeson had a double and a home run in the Titans' eight-run fourth inning. John Furrow had three hits and drove in three for the Blue Demons.

Seminole District: Andrew Oler went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead Liberty to a 10-5 win over Brookville (7-12) in first-round action.

Caleb Tomlin added three hits and three RBI for the Minutemen (12-8).

• James Garraghty pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Jefferson Forest ripped Rustburg 12-1 in a first-round game in Forest.

Ryan Rudisill's three-run double keyed a nine-run sixth inning for Jefferson Forest (12-9). The Cavaliers will host Amherst County in a semifinal game at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

• Aaron Read made up for an error that allowed the tying run to score in the seventh inning by blasting a grand slam in the eighth as Heritage ousted Staunton River 10-6 in Lynchburg.

BOYS' SOCCER

Blue Ridge District: Lonnie Allen scored three goals to lift Alleghany to a 6-2 first-round home win over William Fleming.

Robert McNown, Marcus Ward and Greg Bartocci all scored once for Alleghany (8-8-1). The Mountaineers play top-seeded William Byrd in a semifinal Wednesday at Northside.

River Ridge District: Cave Spring and Salem advanced with first-round shutout victories.

Sam Hiatt scored four goals and added an assist in Cave Spring's 6-0 win over Pulaski County at Merriman Sports Complex. Tyler Kerr recorded the shutout for the Knights (10-7, 6-5), who will take on Blacksburg on Wednesday at Hidden Valley.

Andres Calderon's two goals led Salem (9-5-2) to a 5-0 triumph over Christiansburg. The game in Salem was called with 14 minutes left in the second half because of lightning. The Spartans will face Hidden Valley in the semifinals.

Highlands District: Mike Cisneros scored two goals and Marion routed Virginia High 7-1 to reach Wednesday's championship game against Abingdon.

Piedmont District: Fernando Gonzales' five goals paced Bassett to a 6-0 victory over winless Dan River, and Omar Diaz scored twice to pace Tunstall to a 4-0 conquest of Patrick County in first-round games at Martinsville High School.

Jorge Rios also scored for Bassett (9-5-3) , which will meet Martinsville in Wednesday's semifinals. Tunstall will meet Magna Vista.

GIRLS' SOCCER

River Ridge District: Amanda Adams notched a goal and three assists as host Salem topped Christiansburg 6-0 in a first-round match.

Amy Farebaugh added a goal and an assist for the Spartans (12-3-2), who outshot the Blue Demons 26-2.

• Erin Howard and Mary Carmen Easterwood each scored three goals as Blacksburg (12-4-1) rolled over Pulaski County 11-0 in a first-round match.

Seminole District: Ben Berry scored three goals as Liberty defeated Staunton River 5-0 in a first-round match.

Peter Thuruthy added a goal and two assists for the Minutemen (11-6).

Mountain Empire District: Cody Light scored twice as Narrows overcame Grayson County for the 3-2 first-round win.

Narrows (7-6, 4-3) will face the winner of the Galax-Fort Chiswell match on Wednesday night in the semifinals.

STATE GIRLS SOCCER

Highlands District: Emily Williams scored two goals as Marion stopped Virginia High 6-3 to reach the championship game.

Jaclyn Trour, Meghan Mitchell and Emma Sturgill each had one goal for Marion, which meets Abingdon at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Hollow Park.

Seminole District: Liberty edged past the visiting Amherst County (3-10-1) for a 2-1 win in the first round of Seminole District play.

Melissa Lohr and Hannah White each scored for the Minettes (13-3-1, 9-3-1).
