Curtis, Hartman dominate Blue Ridge

William Fleming's Mijuan Curtis and Lord Botetourt's Courtney Hartman each won three events to lead their respective teams to championships Saturday at the Blue Ridge District track and field meet in Daleville.

Curtis captured the 100 meters (11.27 seconds), 200 (22.65) and 400 (50.56) as Fleming outscored Northside 184-145 in the boys' meet. Hartman swept the 100 (12.93), 200 (26.76) and high jump (5-0) as Botetourt edged Fleming 166-157.

Northside's Catherine White set three meet records in the two-day meet. The sophomore won the 800 (2:17.80), 1,600 (5:03.32) and 3,200 (10:56.05).

Botetourt's Rebecca Mikulas set a meet record in the girls' discus (130-6).

Western Valley District: Host E.C. Glass won both team titles in Lynchburg, taking the boys' meet by a 165-116 score over Patrick Henry and winning the girls' crown 185-182 over Franklin County.

Shaundra Cook won twice for Franklin County, taking the high jump (5-2) and 100 hurdles (15.96). Patrick Henry's Nancy Baar won the pole vault (9-6), while Franklin County won the 400 relay (51.22).

Three Rivers District: Cam Weinz won the high jump (6-2), 100 (11.51), 200 (22.98) and 400 (52.12) to lead Radford to the boys' team title at Floyd County High School.

Floyd won the girls' meet as Morgan Weeks took the long jump (15-6 3/4 ) and triple jump (32-6 3/4 ).

Radford's boys also got double victories from B.J. Wade in the shot put (46-2) and discus (144-5), and Nathan Brame in the 1,600 (4:41.71) and 3,200 (10:21.81). Cornell Core of Giles won the 110 hurdles (16.20) and 300 hurdles (43.57).

Double winners for the girls were Radford's Whitney King in the discus (119-10) and high jump (4-10), Radford's Leslie Plott in the 100 (13.40) and 200 (27.89), and Glenvar's Kelly Clark in the 1,600 (5:14.65) and 3,200 (11:40.67).

Pioneer District: Craig County's Casey Hancock won five events, but Covington easily claimed the boys' championship at Parry McCluer High School.

Hancock swept the long jump (19-4), triple jump (39-4 1/2 ), 100 (11.54), 200 (23.78) and 400 (52.74). Nick Greever was a double winner for Covington in the 1,600 (4:51) and 3,200 (10:50).

James River topped Covington for the girls' title as Brittany Chambers dominated the sprints, winning the 100 (12.95), 200 (26.84) and 400 (1:01.0).

Craig County's Lori Crotts won the 1,600 (5:27) and 3,200 (11:56). Teammate Misty McCoy won the 100 hurdles (19.19) and 300 hurdles (52.44).

SOCCER

Northside 3, Lord Botetourt 2: Kelly Koeneman blasted in a loose ball from in front of the net in the second overtime to give the Northside girls the win in the playoff for the Blue Ridge District regular-season title Saturday in Vinton.

Botetourt tied the game in the final minute of regulation when Cathy Wright scored on an assist from Brea Phillips.

Amber Hentschel scored the first goal for Northside and added an assist on a shot by Alexi Staton. Whitney Robertson scored on a feed from Stephanie Secamiglio early in the second half for Botetourt.

Northside will play Alleghany in the tournament semifinals Wednesday, while Botetourt takes on William Byrd.

Carroll County 2, Graham 1, OT: Jason Vachara scored the game-winner in sudden death as the Cavalier boys won a playoff for the Southwest District regular-season title.

Joe Moreno tied the game late in the second half for Carroll (10-6), which will host Richlands in the SWD tournament Tuesday. Bill Mercke scored the goal for Graham (11-5-1).

BOYS' TENNIS

Valley District: Pat Higgins and Justin Fainter of Rockbridge County kept their unbeaten doubles season intact by defeating Matt Kerr and Daniel Bobbitt of Spotswood 6-4, 6-3 to win the title and advance to the Region II tournament.

Higgins and Fainter eliminated Jeremiah Shiflet and Logan Bare of Broadway 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals.

SOFTBALL

Christiansburg 2, Cave Spring 0: The host Blue Demons grabbed the No.2 seed in next week's River Ridge District tournament.

Christiansburg coach Kurt Litton gained his 100th win in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Chelsea Kelly took the loss for the Knights (13-3, 9-1), who saw their 10-game winning streak end.

Northside 5, Lord Botetourt 2: Christine Wolfe went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Vikings in the first game to break a three-team tie for first in the Blue Ridge District.

Lindsey Jarrett struck out seven and allowed five hits for Northside (15-6, 7-1) in the game in Vinton.

Northside will next play Alleghany for the district regular-season title in Daleville on Monday.

Hidden Valley 6, Blacksburg 0: Megan Hall threw a one-hitter as the Titans (12-6, 7-3) won their regular-season finale Friday.

Lauren VanThiel went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Both Taylor Vaughn and Kelly McDow doubled.
