Harvey, Knights capture crown in girls' soccer
High schools
Jennifer Harvey scored three of her four goals in the first half as Cave Spring clinched the River Ridge District girls' soccer championship with a 7-0 win Thursday over Christiansburg.
Katie Fanti, Jourdan McDaniel and Areli Thamez also scored for the Knights (13-1-2, 7-1-2).
Carlislie 1, North Cross 0: Hilary Moore's goal late in the first half proved the difference as Carlisle beat host North Cross in the semifinals of the Blue Ridge Conference tournament.
Mary Ellyson Delaney recorded seven saves for North Cross (17-3).
Britnee Millner had seven saves for Carlisle (11-4), which will play either Chatham Hall or Eastern Mennonite in the final on Saturday.
Northside 2, Lord Botetourt 0: Amber Hentschel and Taylor Harrington each scored a goal as Northside (7-7-1, 4-1-1) scored a rain-shortened Blue Ridge District win over visiting Lord Botetourt to tie for the regular-season district title.
The two teams will meet again at 11 a.m. Saturday William Byrd to play for the title.
Krystle Barker recorded 11 saves for Northside (7-8-1, 4-1-1).
Blacksburg 2, Hidden Valley 1, OT: Megan Rhodes scored 2 1/2 minutes into the second overtime to lift Blacksburg to a River Ridge District win over host Hidden Valley.
Kristi Schmitt also scored for the Bruins, then with less than two minutes left in regulation Bre Barrineau netted the tying score for Hidden Valley (12-2-2, 6-2-2) to force overtime.
BASEBALL
William Byrd 6, William Fleming 1: K.J. Sobolewski went 2-for-3 for the Terriers and hit a three-run home run in the third as William Byrd overpowered the visiting Colonels for the Blue Ridge District win.
Ross Adkins went 2-for-4 for William Byrd (14-6, 5-3), hitting a solo homer and driving in three runs. David Dillard went 2-for-4 for William Fleming (1-7 Blue Ridge).
Bland County 9, Eastern Montgomery 6, 8 innings: Josh Taylor hit an RBI-single in the eighth for the Bears to drive in Robert Faulkner, as they took the extra-innings game from the Mustangs in Bland, which began on March 29 in Elliston.
The game was started today with the scored tied at six in the bottom of the seventh with Eastern Montgomery up to bat. Shane Kincaid shut down the Mustangs in the seventh, and again in the bottom of the eighth.
Tyler Pennington went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI for Bland County (12-6), and Dusty East went 2-for-4 with a double for Eastern Montgomery.
Carroll County 15, Richlands 5, 5 innings: Willie Yates went 3-for-4 and pitched as Carroll County clinched at least a tie for second place in the Southwest District with a win over Richlands in Hillsville.
Casey Lawson went 3-for-5 for the Cavaliers (8-11, 5-3).
Hidden Valley 4, Blacksburg 2, 6 innings: Jay Osborne and Tyler Coyer each had RBI-base hits in the Titans' three-run top of the fifth to lift Hidden Valley to a River Ridge District victory over the host Bruins (6-12, 3-7).
Brandon Dove went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the first inning for Blacksburg (10-9, 5-4).
Cave Spring 10, Christiansburg 4: John Bast pitched a complete game and went 1-for-2 with an RBI as Cave Spring beat visiting Christiansburg in a River Ridge District game.
Andrew Feldenzer drove in three runs with two hits, including a two-run homer for the Knights (14-4, 9-0). Danny Aiken went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs.
Justin Owens had two hits for Christiansburg, which fell to 2-8 in the district.
Alleghany 10, PH 4, 6 innings: Robbie Andrews went 3-for-3 and scored three runs as Alleghany topped host Patrick Henry in a nondistrict game shortened to six innings by impending darkness.
Ben Deck went 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Patriots (4-16).
Glenvar 5, Floyd County 0: Jacob Giardina went 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI to help lift the Highlanders over the Buffaloes and clinch the Three Rivers District regular season championship in Floyd.
Brian Bowles scattered just four hits over six innings on the mound for Glenvar (13-4, 9-1), striking out 11 batters and walking just one. Bowles went 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. Kendall Wade went 2-for-3 for Floyd County (0-20, 0-10).
E.C. Glass 6, Franklin County 5, 9 innings: Glass scored two unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a Western Valley District win over Franklin County in Rocky Mount.
The Eagles (11-9, 2-6) committed two errors on the same play allowing Drew Elkins and Matt Bergin to score.
Zach Brubaker had two hits and drove in a run for Franklin County, which will play the winner of tonight's playoff game between GW and Halifax on Tuesday.
E.C. Glass, which finished third in the district, will play the loser of the GW-Halifax game.
Northside 5, Lord Botetourt 0: Michael Lloyd had three hits and knocked in three runs, and Matthew Flora combined with Ryan Frazier and Andrew Stover to shut out the Cavaliers. Turner Phelps had three of Botetourt's four hits.
Northside finished the Blue Ridge District play with a 6-2 record and is 12-7 overall.
Craig County 3-8, Bath County 1-3: The host Rockets swept a Pioneer District doubleheader in New Castle as Brandon Fisher and Sean Looney got the wins on the mound.
Looney also had two hits, scored twice and knocked in two runs in the second game for Craig County (12-6, 7-3).
BOYS' SOCCER
Floyd County 2, Grayson County 1: Alfredo Morales and Dylan Weiss both scored for the Buffaloes as Floyd County (7-7-1) took a nondistrict win over the visiting Blue Devils.
George Wythe 4, Glenvar 3: Thomas Crowgey scored twice for the Maroons as they took a nondistrict win from the host Highlanders.
Rett Peel and Aaron Crowgey also scored for George Wythe (10-3). Michael Hunter and Cameron Webb each had a goal and an assist for Glenvar (9-6-1).
Cave Spring 3, Christiansburg 0: Luigi Greco scored two goals and an assist as Cave Spring earned a River Ridge District win over visiting Christiansburg (2-14, 0-8) in a game shortened by 10 minutes because of lightning.
Derek Dooley also scored for the Knights (9-7, 5-5).
Lord Botetourt 2, Northside 1: Goalkeeper Bobby Eanes scored on a penalty kick and made five saves as Lord Botetourt scored a rain-shortened Blue Ridge District win over Northside in Daleville.
Justin Stanek scored the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers (5-2-1 in the district), with an assist from Will Thomas.
Jeremy Martin scored on a penalty kick for Northside (4-2-2).
Blacksburg 2, Hidden Valley 0: Blacksburg captured the River Ridge District regular-season championship with a win over visiting Hidden Valley in a game interrupted twice, then finally shortened by lightning.
Matt Becker and Daniel Ehrich each scored a goal for the Bruins (14-2, 10-0). Tim Becker and Evan Carstensen assisted. Peyton Berkeley had one save.
Phil Coldiron made five saves for Hidden Valley (13-3, 8-2).
SOFTBALL
Franklin County 7, Halifax 2: India Metz went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and drove in two runs for the Eagles as they soared past the Blue Comets (6-2 WVD) to win the Western Valley District regular season championship in Rocky Mount.
Jenny Law went 1-for-3 with two RBI for Franklin County (13-2, 8-0), and Amy Kennedy earned the complete game win on the mound, scattering seven hits, walking two, and striking out four.
Lord Botetourt 5, Northside 3: Anne Tatum hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth for the Cavaliers to give them the lead as they took the win over Northside (6-2 BRD) in Daleville and forced a three-way tie for first place in the Blue Ridge District.
With Tatum on deck, Amanda Sabin tied the game for Lord Botetourt (16-4, 6-2) with an RBI-single, and Lauren Snead went the distance on the mound, scattering six hits and striking out nine.
TRACK AND FIELD
Piedmont District: Brandon Dillard set a 2005 Timesland best in the 200-meter dash with a hand-timed clocking of 21.82 seconds as he led the Bengals to the boys' title Wednesday at Laurel Park Middle School.
Dillard, who won the 100 in 10.49, also anchored Bassett's 400 relay team in a Timesland-leading time of 42.8 seconds.
Bassett outscored Martinsville 160-92 to win the team title. Martinsville won its third straight girls' crown with a 146-130 margin over the Bengals as Charice Marsh won the long jump (17-2 1/2 ) and triple jump (34-6) for the Bulldogs.
Teacarla Wade of Magna Vista swept the girls' 100 (12.38) and 200 (26.12). Patrick County's Mauri Wimbush set a Timesland best in the boys' discus (154-11).
GIRLS' LACROSSE
Patrick Henry 14, New River Valley 6: Kristin Colonna scored five goals and the Patriots advanced to the final of the Valley Cup with a home win.
Margaret Kreger scored twice for PH, which plays at Salem on Friday in the final.
