Glenvar locks up share of softball title with unbeaten district record High school roundup

Glenvar clinched at least a share of the Three Rivers District regular-season softball title Tuesday with a 2-0 win over visiting Floyd County.

Meredith Buckley allowed four hits and struck out nine.

Sarah Armstrong went 3-for-3 with a double and drove in both runs for the Highlanders (9-8, 8-0). Kat Caldwell finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Jessie Radford tripled for the Buffaloes (14-5, 7-2).

Cave Spring 17, Pulaski County 1, five innings: The Knights scored 17 runs on 14 hits and got steady pitching from Jillian Sullivan as they claimed the River Ridge District title with a win over the visiting Cougars.

In the fourth inning, MacKenzie Meador knocked a grand slam and Meredith Moore added a two-run homer four batters later for Cave Spring (13-2, 9-0). Meador finished with five RBI while Jessica Lancaster added two RBI.

Sullivan pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10.

Whitney Grey had a double and an RBI for Pulaski County (9-11, 2-7).

Franklin County 4, Halifax 3: Amy Betterman had a home run and two RBI as the Eagles (11-2, 6-0) sealed the Western Valley District title with the win in Rocky Mount.

Winning pitcher Shannon Manning lasted 6 2/3 innings. All three of the Blue Comets (5-1) runs came in the seventh inning.

Alleghany 10-21, William Fleming 0-0: Jessi Allman recorded 15 strikeouts to account for all the outs in the five-inning game 1 as the Mountaineers dominated a Blue Ridge District doubleheader in Low Moor.

Allman allowed three hits and walked one for Alleghany (16-3, 6-2), which wrapped up its regular season and can finish in a three-way tie for first in the district. Amanda Carr hit a three-run homer and drove in five as the Mountaineers romped in the five-inning second game.

Amy Crews had two hits in game 1 and Darnita Stone added two in the second game for Fleming.

James River 11-11, Bath County 0-2: The Knights wrapped up the Pioneer District title with a doubleheader sweep over the Chargers in Hot Springs.

Abbie Rexrode pitched both games and tallied 30 strikeouts in 13 innings of work.

Jennifer Windsor and Sam Linkenhoker had the big hits in game 1 for James River (16-3, 9-1) with Windsor hitting a two-run homer and a double and Linkenhoker smashing a solo shot in the first.

In game 2, Kayla Horton was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and Shannon Austin had three hits while scoring three runs.

BASEBALL

Hidden Valley 21, Christiansburg 3, 5 Innings: Hidden Valley's Bryan Moore hit two home runs and drove in three RBI as the Titans defeated the Demons in a River Ridge District game in Christiansburg.

Tyler Coyer also contributed one home run and two RBI for the Titans (9-9, 4-4). Nick Thompson hit a two-run homer for Christiansburg (7-12, 2-7).

George Wythe 4, Chilhowie 3: Dusty Crigger and Josh Scott both went 2-for-3 with a double as the host Maroons (10-5-1, 8-5-1) took the Hogoheegee District win over the Warriors.

Devin Smith earned the win, while brother Trey Smith recorded the save.

James River 10, Bath County 7: Brad Duke hit a two-run single in the seventh to pull the Knights ahead of the Chargers as they clinched the regular-season Pioneer District championship in Hot Springs.

Brian Mays went 2-for-4 for James River (11-9, 8-2) with a three-run home run and four RBI, while Caleb Dorton added a two-run home run. John Phillips was intentionally walked five times and scored three runs for Bath County (2-6 Pioneer).

Bland County 8, Galax 7: Evan Harner singled in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Josh Dillow and give the Bears the Mountain Empire District win over the Maroon Tide (2-6 Mountain Empire).

The tying run for Bland County (11-6, 4-4) came off a two-run double from Dillow late in the same inning. Josh Blessing earned the win, scattering five hits and striking out nine.

Craig County 3, Glenvar 2: Brandon Fisher knocked in Chris Nelson for the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh as the Rockets edged past the host Highlanders in a nondistrict win.

Austin Sixbey went 2-for-2 and scored a run for Craig County. B.J. Edwards went 1-for-2 with a double for Glenvar (11-4).

Halifax 5, Franklin County 4, 8 Innings: Ryan Gieselman scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth off a Blake Waller single to give the Blue Comets the Western Valley District win over the visiting Eagles.

Tim Clemons hit an RBI double for Franklin County (11-8, 2-5). The Halifax (16-3, 7-1) win forces a tie-breaker with George Wythe for first place in the district; the deciding game will be played Friday.

Cave Spring 9, Pulaski County 5: Danny Aiken and Andrew Feldenzer hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the Knights' five-run seventh as Cave Spring overcame the host Cougars in a River Ridge District game in Dublin.

Alan Moore went 2-for-2 with a triple and a homer for the Knights (9-0 River Ridge), scoring two runs and driving in three. Jay Lester went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fifth for Pulaski County (11-8-1, 5-5).

Blacksburg 4, Salem 3: Derek Doss drove in Tim Smiley with a single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Bruins to a River Ridge District upset victory over the visiting Spartans.

Brandon Dove pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits while surrendering just two earned runs for Blacksburg (6-11, 3-6). Dove, a four year starter, also chipped in two hits including the 100th of his career, the first time a Bruin reached triple figures.

Kirk Richardson finished 3-for-3 to lead Salem (11-8, 5-5).

Grayson County 12, Carroll County 9: Nathan Cline had three hits and three RBI as the Blue Devils defeated the Cavaliers in Independence.

Jamie Butler had two hits and drove in three runs for Grayson (13-6). Casey Lawson and Willie Yates had two hits each for Carroll County.

William Byrd 14, Lord Botetourt 2, five innings: Andy Odenthal pitched a four-hitter as the Terriers routed the Cavaliers (10-7, 1-6) in Blue Ridge action in Daleville.

Brandon Chocklette connected for a two-run homer and Matt Byrd added a three-run home run for William Byrd (13-6, 4-3).

VES 7, North Cross 2: Raggs Rasloe pitched a five-hitter to lead Virginia Episcopal (8-11) past the Raiders in nondistrict action in Lynchburg.

Mason Turner had two hits and scored a run along with Bo Frith, who had a triple for North Cross (12-8).

BOYS' SOCCER

Bassett 4, Martinsville 2: The Bengals beat the visiting Bulldogs (7-2-1 Piedmont) for the first time ever in a Piedmont District matchup.

Johnathan Pace, Thomas Franklin, Matt Heaton, and Fernando Gonzalez each had one goal for Bassett (6-7-2 district).

Hidden Valley 8, Christiansburg 0: Fernando Gracia scored twice as the Titans romped to a River Ridge District victory in Christiansburg.

Matt Smith, Tommy Robinson, Kyle Black, Kayvon Sarmadi, Taylor Walsh and Keith McHugh each added a goal for Hidden Valley (13-2, 8-1).

William Byrd 2, Lord Botetourt 0: The Terriers wrapped up their third straight Blue Ridge District championship with a 2-0 win over the Cavaliers (4-10-1, 4-2-1) in Vinton.

Chris Collins and Cameron Sheperd each notched goals for William Byrd (12-2-1, 6-0-1).

Cave Spring 4, Pulaski County 1: Derek Dooley, Andrew Markey, Beau Austin and Aaron Brock each scored as the Knights (8-7, 4-5) handled the visiting Cougars in a River Ridge District matchup.

Blacksburg 4, Salem 0: The host Bruins defeated the Spartans in a River Ridge District match.

Kevin Gregory, Will Matthews, Tim Becker, and Daniel Ehrich each contributed a goal for Blacksburg (13-2, 9-0).

Liberty 7, Staunton River 0: Camp Parker had two goals and two assists and Ben Berry added two goals as the Minutemen blanked the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District win in Moneta.

Anton Buchanan added a goal and an assist as Liberty (10-6, 8-4) enters next week's district tournament as the No.3 seed.

Glenvar 6, Floyd County 1: Cameron Webb recorded a hat trick for the Highlanders as they captured the Three Rivers District regular-season title in Floyd.

Jason Glinecki scored two and Michael Hunter had one goal for Glenvar (9-5-1, 7-0-1). Zeke Bartel had the goal for Floyd (6-7-1, 3-4-1).

GIRLS' SOCCER

North Cross 4, Roanoke Catholic 0: Molly Steele netted three goals and had an assist as the Raiders shut out the visiting Celtics in a Blue Ridge Conference first-round tournament game.

Lauren Luckay also scored for North Cross (16-2).

Glenvar 6, Floyd County 3: Samantha Weddle and Sara Aesy scored two goals each as the Highlanders (11-3, 2-2) knocked off the visiting Buffaloes in a Three Rivers District showdown.

Abagail Goresky netted a hat trick for Floyd County (0-4 in district).

Salem 2, Blacksburg 0: Amanda Adams and Lindsay Houchin each scored a goal for the Spartans as they took the River Ridge District win over the Bruins in Salem.

Brittany Bolton recorded 10 saves for the Spartans (11-3-2, 6-2-2).

Martinsville 2, Bassett 1: Lauren Welch and Olivia Karavatakis had one goal apiece as the Bulldogs clinched the Piedmont District title with the win at Bassett.

Goalkeeper Jennifer Treadway had nine saves for the Bulldogs (10-4, 10-0). Bengals goalkeeper Kelsey Cooper had seven saves and the lone Bassett goal came from Courtney Newman.

Lord Botetourt 2, William Byrd 1: Cathy Wright scored the winning goal for the host Cavaliers with eight minutes left in the Blue Ridge District game.

Heather Sheridan put Lord Botetourt (7-6-1, 4-0-1) on the board first in the second half. William Byrd (5-11-1, 3-3-1) goalkeeper Julia Childers had 12 saves and Brittany Boltinghouse scored the goal.

Hidden Valley 3, Christiansburg 1: Jessica Welfare netted two goals as the Titans defeated the Demons in a River Ridge District match at Hidden Valley.

Meredith Grunewald also scored for the Titans (12-1-2, 6-1-2). Hannah Kingera scored the lone goal for Christiansburg.

Cave Spring 9, Pulaski County 0: Jourdan McDaniel had two goals and two assists as the Knights defeated the Cougars in the River Ridge District game at Cave Spring.

Kelsey Kerr also had two goals for Cave Spring (12-1-2, 6-1-2). Pulaski County goalkeeper Erin Lineberry had 12 saves.

Franklin County 4, Halifax County 0: Lindsey Prillaman and Lindsay Graewin scored two goals apiece for the Eagles (7-4-3, 4-1-3) as they defeated the Blue Comets (2-6 Western Valley) in a Western Valley District match in Rocky Mount.
