Knights winning streak ends

Arritt went 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI to help the Cougars' (5-8, 4-5) offensive effort. Abbey Rexrode earned the loss on the mound for James River (6-1) despite striking out 11 and scattering four hits over six innings.
Glenvar 8, Giles 0: Kat Caldwell and Holly Dixon each had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Highlanders (9-8, 7-0) to a Three Rivers District win over the Spartans (7-10, 3-6) in Pearisburg.
Floyd County 10, Eastern Montgomery 3: Sam Turpin had two hits and one RBI to lead the Buffaloes (12-4, 7-1) to a Three Rivers District win in Floyd.
Ashley Harrison had two hits and one RBI for the Mustangs (1-15, 1-8).
Bath County 4, Parry McCluer 3: Monica Plecker hit a solo home run to lead the Chargers (8-3, 5-1) in a Pioneer District game in Hot Springs.
Lord Botetourt 1, Alleghany 0: Lauren Snead threw a three-hitter, striking out 11 and walking three, to lead the Cavaliers to a Blue Ridge District win in Daleville.
In the fourth inning, Anne Tatum of the Cavaliers (10-4, 4-2) doubled and scored on Tera Wallis' RBI single.
BASEBALL
James River 7, Covington 6, 8 innings: Ninth-place hitter Bobby Buchanan tied the game with an RBI-single in the sixth inning and smacked a go-ahead home run in the eighth as the Knights clinched a tie for the Pioneer District baseball title with a 7-6 win over Covington at Casey Field.
Brian Mays earned the victory with two innings of relief for James River (10-8, 7-2).
Northside 6, William Byrd 4: Matt Flora had two hits and an RBI for the Vikings in a Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.
Michael Lloyd added two hits for Northside (5-2 in District). Aaron Conner doubled and had an RBI for the Terriers (12-6, 3-3).
Cave Spring 3, Salem 2: Robert Mills went the distance on the mound for the Knights, striking out eight and scattering seven hits without allowing an earned run, as Cave Spring edged the visiting Spartans (12-6, 5-4) for a River Ridge District win.
Kevin Munson and D.K.Staton both went 2-for-3 for Cave Spring (12-4, 7-0), and each drove in a run in the Knights' three-run first inning.
Christiansburg 4, Blacksburg 3: Corey Graham singled home the winning run with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give the host Blue Demons (7-11, 2-6) a River Ridge District win.
Tim Smiley and Justin Graham each had two hits and an RBI for Blacksburg (5-11, 2-6).
Auburn 12, Radford 1: Shane Coleman had three hits and two RBI to lead the visiting Eagles to a Three Rivers District win.
Chris Campbell pitched a six-hitter, striking out eight and walking none, for Auburn (5-4 district). Garrett Edwards of the Bobcats (10-5, 7-2) was 3-for-3, including a triple.
Eastern Montgomery 4, Floyd County 1: Josh Burgess hit an RBI-bunt in the first inning to drive in Jordan Stewart, who scored the winning run for the Mustangs as they overcame the Buffaloes in a Three Rivers District matchup in Shawsville.
Stewart was 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI, and Eastern Montgomery (9-8, 3-5) starter Derek Hancock went the distance on the mound, surrendering just one hit and striking out eight.
Grayson County 15, Fort Chiswell 1, 5 innings: Shayne Burris had one hit and three RBI for the Blue Devils as they clinched the Mountain Empire District title in Independence.
Hidden Valley 4, Pulaski County 1: Mikey O'Brien drove in two runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the Titans on top of the visiting Cougars for a River Ridge District win.
Jayson Divers pitched a complete game on the hill for Hidden Valley (7-9, 3-4), scattering six hits and striking out nine, and Daniel Gills homered and doubled for the Titans. Sam Brediger added two doubles in Hidden Valley's hit parade.
Patrick County 6, Magna Vista 4: Jesse Morrison hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh for the Cougars (5-5 district) in a Piedmont District game in Ridgeway.
Alleghany 10, Lord Botetourt 0, 5 innings: Aaron Hall recorded three hits and three RBI for the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Low Moor.
Liberty 2, Brookville 1: Andrew Oler hit an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth inning to drive in Matt Quarals and claim the lead for the Minutemen as they took the Seminole District win from the visiting Bees (7-8, 3-8).
Parry McCluer 9, Bath County 6: Andy Fainter had two hits and two RBI as the Fighting Blues overcame a four-point deficit to win a Pioneer District game in Warm Springs.
Jefferson Forest 8, Amherst 0: Ryan Litz went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and a solo homer for the Cavaliers in Forest.
Glenvar 12, Giles 5: Jacob Giardina hit a two-RBI double to lead the Highlanders (11-3, 7-1) to a Three Rivers District win in Salem. Glenvar moved into first place in the district.
J.D. Dudding belted a solo shot for Giles (9-9, 3-5).
Chilhowie 9, Holston 3: Jared Pierce hit a two-RBI single for the Warriors in the bottom of the sixth to break the 3-3 tie as Chilhowie beat the Cavaliers for a Hogoheegee District win in Chilhowie.
BOYS' SOCCER
Cave Spring 2, Salem 1, 2 OT: Sam Hiatt scored the game-winning goal for the Knights in a River Ridge District game.
Adam Brock scored with two minutes left in regulation for visiting Cave Spring (7-7, 3-5) to force overtime. Andres Calderson scored the only goal for the Spartans.
Hidden Valley 3, Pulaski County 0: Taylor Walsh netted three goals for the Titans as they took a River Ridge District shutout win from the visiting Cougars.
Kayvon Sarmadi added a goal for Hidden Valley (11-2, 6-1). Zane Lineberry recorded 20 saves in front of the net for Pulaski County.
Lord Botetourt 1, Alleghany 0: Josh Wright scored a goal assisted by his brother Tim with six minutes left for the Cavaliers in a Blue Ridge District game in Daleville.
Goalkeeper Bobby Eanes had four saves for Lord Botetourt (4-1-1 district).
Patrick Henry 2, E.C. Glass 1: Jack Moore scored both goals unassisted for the Patriots and handed the Hilltoppers their first loss.
Blacksburg 7, Christiansburg 0: Jon Talbot scored twice for the Bruins as they shut out the Demons in a River Ridge District match in Blacksburg.
Albert Alwang added a goal and an assist for Blacksburg (12-2, 8-0).
Northside 2, William Byrd 2, 2 OT: Chris Joyner and Ben Overstreet each scored one goal for the Vikings (9-3-3, 4-1-2) in a Blue Ridge District game.
The visiting William Byrd goals were scored by Omar Cooke and Jonathan Murrill.
Jefferson Forest 1, Amherst County 1: The Cavaliers had their perfect season marred as Will Cash scored for the Lancers in the last 10 minutes to match an earlier goal by JF's Shea Kelly.
JF (15-0-1, 11-0-1) clinched the Seminole District title over the Lancers (12-3-1, 10-1-1) with the win.
GIRLS' SOCCER
Radford 8, Roanoke Catholic 0: Meg Khandan-Barani netted three goals for the Bobcats as they shut out the Celtics (9-7-2) in a nondistrict game in Radford.
Nikki Greco added two goals for Radford (12-0).
Lord Botetourt 6, Alleghany 0: Brittany Wright and Heather Sheridan scored two goals apiece as the Cavaliers (6-6-1, 3-0-1) stayed unbeaten in the Blue Ridge District with a road win.
Roanoke Valley Christian 3, Virginia Episcopal 1: Maria King scored two goals for the Eagles (7-5, 5-5) in a Blue Ridge Conference game.
Celie Wall scored a goal for visiting VES.
Blacksburg 7, Christiansburg 0: Kristy Schmitt scored two goals for the Bruins as they shut out the Demons for a River Ridge District win in Blacksburg.
Hayley Rhodes added two assists for Blacksburg (10-3-1, 15-3).
BOYS' TENNIS
Group AAA: Defending Group AAA champion Patrick Henry's bid for a third straight Northwest Region boys' tennis title ended abruptly Friday as Osbourn handed the Patriots a 5-1 loss in a first-round match in Manassas.
Western Valley District singles champion Bo Edwards was the lone winner for PH, topping Matt Krawczyk 6-2, 6-2 at No.1 singles. The match ended when Osbourn's Jose Aguirre defeated Ryan Luckay 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) at No. 5 singles.
PH ended its season at 7-7. Osbourn (15-0) will host Albemarle in the semifinals May18.
