Sarmadi kick lifts Titans

Kayvon Sarmadi's penalty kick with less than three minutes left to play in the second overtime Tuesday lifted host Hidden Valley to a 1-0 boys' soccer victory over Salem.

Phil Coldiron recorded nine saves for the Titans (6-1, 1-0 River Ridge District).

Northside 8, William Fleming 0: Hien Nguyen scored three goals as the visiting Vikings defeated the Colonels in a Blue Ridge District game.

Chris Joyner added two goals with one assist for Northside (5-2-1, 1-0.)

Blacksburg 3, Cave Spring 1: Matt Becke, Kevin Gregory and Jon Talbot scored to give the visiting Bruins (5-2, 1-0) a River Ridge District win.

Aaron Bock scored for the Knights (4-2, 0-1).

Pulaski County 3, Christiansburg 2: Graham Owens scored with 20 seconds left to give the visiting Cougars (4-1-1, 1-0) a River Ridge District win over the Blue Demons.

Jake Lambert and Zach Boyd scored for Christiansburg (1-2-2, 0-1).

BASEBALL

Glenvar 6, Eastern Montgomery 2: Brian Bowles limited the Mustangs (8-4, 1-1) to five hits over six innings while striking out eight and the Highlanders won their Three Rivers District opener in Elliston.

Evan Noell had three hits for Glenvar (5-2, 1-0), while Davy Spangler had two hits and two RBI.

Northside 10, William Fleming 0, 6 innings: Matthew Flora pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks to lift the Vikings to a home victory over the Colonels (0-7, 0-1) in their Blue Ridge District opener.

Ryan Frazier went 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple for Northside (7-4, 1-0).

Salem 6, Hidden Valley 5: Tyler Atkins blooped a single that scored pinch-runner Jason Hopkins with the winning run as the Spartans took a River Ridge District road victory.

Jason Jones had two hits including a three-run double for Salem (6-2, 1-0). Daniel Gills had three hits and two RBI, while Jay Osborne had two hits and two RBI for the Titans (4-6, 0-1).

Lord Botetourt 9, Patrick Henry 3: Zach Bennett's grand slam highlighted a big day at the plate for Botetourt as the Cavaliers routed the visiting Patriots.

Turner Phelps and Josh Holskey each had three hits for Botetourt (8-1). Holskey had a home run. Adam Hart had three hits for PH (3-6).

Cave Spring 6, Blacksburg 4: Robert Mills recorded nine strikeouts as the Knights downed the visiting Bruins in both teams' River Ridge District opener.

Mills was also 2-for-3 with two RBI and a solo home run for Cave Spring (6-3, 1-0). Scott McKee went 2-for-3 for Blacksburg (3-6, 0-1).

Radford 12, Floyd County 3: Mike Douglas broke open a 5-3 game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bobcats downed the Buffaloes (0-10, 0-1) in a Three Rivers game.

Marc Ailstock went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for Radford (5-3, 2-0).

Pulaski County 5, Christiansburg 0: Zach Phillips fired a two-hitter and struck out 11 as the Cougars (6-3-1, 1-0) won on the road in their River Ridge District opener.

Christiansburg is 5-6, 0-1.

Giles 8, Auburn 2: Coach Bruce Frazier gained his 250th career win as the Spartans (7-5, 1-1) scored six unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to best the Eagles in Riner. Billy Stoffel led Auburn (5-5, 0-2) with two RBI.

William Byrd 9, Alleghany 0: Andy Odenthal gave up only two hits in five innings as the Terriers shut out the visiting Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game. Aaron Conner and K.J. Sobolewski led William Byrd (7-3, 1-0) with three and two RBI respectfully.

SOFTBALL

Cave Spring 1, Blacksburg 0: Meredith Moore's RBI-triple scored Kim Hunt with two outs in the sixth inning as the Knights opened River Ridge District play with a win in Blacksburg.

Chelsea Kelley pitched a four-hitter and struck out six for Cave Spring (5-2, 1-0). Emily Belote gave up just six hits for Blacksburg (3-4, 0-1).

Glenvar 9, Eastern Montgomery 0: Meredith Buckley pitched a one-hitter, striking out 16 and walking one, to lead the Highlanders (1-5, 1-0) to a Three Rivers District win in Salem. Buckley also had two hits and two RBI.

Hidden Valley 9, Salem 1: Meghan Hall pitched a three-hitter, striking out seven and walking none, to lead the visiting Titans (5-3, 1-0) to a River Ridge District win over the Spartans (1-7, 0-1).

Auburn 11, Giles 5: Chelsey Sullivan had three hits and three RBI to lead the Eagles to a Three Rivers District win in Pearisburg.

Nicole Layton had three hits and one RBI for Auburn (5-4, 2-0).

Alleghany 6, William Byrd 4: Jessi Allman earned the win for the Mountaineers (10-1) with an eight-strikeout performance and backed herself with two hits and an RBI in Low Moor.

Laura Wise allowed seven hits, struck out nine and walked one for the Terriers (5-4).

Christiansburg 7, Pulaski County 0: Hope Creasy pitched a shutout, racking up four strikeouts and allowing only five hits and a walk, as the Demons gained a win in their River Ridge District opener at Pulaski County (6-4, 0-1).

Monica Miles went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Christiansburg (6-3, 1-0).

GIRLS' SOCCER

Cave Spring 2, Blacksburg 1, 2OT: Jordan McDaniel scored in the second OT as the Knights stayed unbeaten with a win in Blacksburg.

Rachel Beaumont had the other goal for Cave Spring (6-0, 1-0). Megan Rhodes scored for Blacksburg (4-1-1, 0-1).

Hidden Valley 2, Salem 1: Meredith Grunewald and Bethany Wedge helped their team remain undefeated as the Titans downed the Spartans in a River Ridge district game in Salem.

Grunewald and Wedge each scored a goal for Hidden Valley (6-0, 1-0), while Amanda Adams scored the only goal for Salem (5-2, 0-1).

Patrick Henry 2, Lord Botetourt 1: Kristin McCoy scored both goals to lift the host Patriots (4-2-1, 1-0). Brittany Wright received credit for a goal scored off a header on a corner kick for Lord Botetourt (2-5, 0-0).

William Byrd 8, Alleghany 0: Brittany Jividen scored two goals as the Terriers won a Blue Ridge District home game

Jessica Rigsby had a goal and two assists for Byrd (3-6, 1-0).

Roanoke Valley Christian 1, Lynchburg Christian Academy 0: Lauren Reid scored the only goal of the night early in the first half as the Eagles (4-1, 2-1) defeated the Lynchburg Christian Academy on the road.

BOYS' LACROSSE

Patrick Henry 15, Hargrave Military Academy 5: Spencer Noe and Matt Pero each scored three goals to lead the Patriots (4-2) to a win over Hargrave (1-4) in Chatham.

BASEBALL

George Wythe 6, Lebanon 5: Freshman Devin Smith bailed out older brother Trey Smith as he retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning to preserve a 6-5 baseball win by George Wythe over Lebanon in Wytheville.

Trey Smith got the victory and also had two hits and two RBI for Wythe (5-3-1, 3-3-1 Hogoheegee District). Dusty Crigger added two hits for the Maroons.

Bland County 8, Fort Chiswell 7: Justin Faulkner hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and Terry Kincaid recorded the save as the Bears won a Mountain Empire District road game.

Adam Dunn and Josh Blessing each had two hits and two RBI for Bland. Blessing was the winning pitcher. Ryland Edwards hit two home runs and had five RBI for Fort Chiswell (3-8, 0-3).

Dan River 6, Magna Vista 4: John Wilson was the winning pitcher and he hit a two-run home run to lift the Warriors to a Piedmont District win in Ridgeway.

Matt Duffy, Kyle Harris, Travis Wilson and DeShawn Strickland all had two hits for Magna Vista. Duffy and Harris each scored a run and had an RBI. Zach Morris hit a two-run home run for the Warriors (3-6, 1-2).

James River 8, Craig County 2: Dustin Tingler pitched a complete game, recording seven strikeouts while allowing only four hits and two runs, as the Knights shot down the Rockets in New Castle and remained undefeated at 3-0 in the Pioneer District.

Tingler was also 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI for James River, while teammate Matt Cox launched a three-run homer in the top of the last inning. Calin Crush went 1-for-2 with one RBI for Craig County (5-4, 1-1).

SOFTBALL

James River 8, Craig County 0: Freshman Abbie Rexrode pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 as the Knights opened the defense of their Pioneer District title with a win in New Castle.

Jennifer Windsor smashed two triples and a double for James River (6-2, 2-0). Josie Dillon pitched a complete game and gave up seven hits for Craig (5-2, 0-2).

Galax 22, Narrows 0, 5 innings: Beth Walker had two doubles and a triple as the Maroon Tide rolled in Galax.

Baylie Snyder added a two-run home run for Galax (10-2, 5-0). Snyder and Walker combined to pitch a one-hitter.

BOYS SOCCER

Franklin County 3, Hargrave Military Academy 1: David Lynch and Sean Lawrence helped the Eagles take an early lead to defeated the Tigers in Rocky Mount.

Lynch and Lawrence each had a goal in the first half for Franklin County (4-2-1, 1-0), with Justin Seekford assisting on Lawrence's goal. Travis South added another goal for the Eagles in the second half, and Charles Amos scored Hargrave Military Academy's only goal.

James River 6, Staunton River 3: Nathan Cox scored three goals and John Lacks scored one goal with two assists as the Knights defeated the visiting Golden Eagles in a nondistrict game.

Tyler Kelly and Zack Kyle each added one goal For Staunton River (3-4-3, 0-0) while goalie Matt Bryant

had 19 saves.

For Staunton River, Robbie Russell, Chris Harless and J.D. D'Aiuto each scored one goal.

Fort Chiswell 2, Giles 1: Michael Erwin put in the winning goal with 2:15 to go as the Pioneers escaped Pearisburg with a nondistrict victory.

After Josh Ingo put Fort Chiswell ahead 1-0, Wes Johnson tied the game for Giles (2-5-0, 1-2) with 12 minutes left to play.

George Wythe 11, PH-Glade Spring 1: Mark Lilly scored three goals as the Maroons rolled in Wytheville.

Chris Grubb and Rett Peel added two goals for Wythe (4-2, 3-0). Kris Fulton scored for PH-Glade Spring.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Liberty 1, Brookville 1; With the Bees (4-1-1, 1-1-1) up 1-0, Hannah White scored with 32 minutes left to enable the Minettes (7-0-1, 4-0-1) to tie a Seminole District game in Bedford.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Rockbridge County 9, Monticello 3: Colleen Evans scored four goals and Ella Wade added three as the Wildcats (2-3) won in Charlottesville.

Evans will play next year at Bucknell University.
