Fuller carries Celtics to upset

Football

Junior tailback Angelo Fuller broke loose for 242 yards rushing and three touchdowns as Roanoke Catholic knocked off Massanutten Military, the No. 1-ranked team in the VISFA, 21-20 in Woodstock.

Fuller scored on runs of 74, 6 and 61 yards as the Celtics improved to 3-2 on the year. The win was sealed when Massanutten (4-2) scored late in the fourth quarter and elected to go for two points. The ensuing pass was broken up.

Northside 9, Blacksburg 3

Chris Hobson scored on a 2-yard run in overtime and Ben Creasy intercepted a pass on the Bruins' possession to preserve the Vikings' first win of the season in Blacksburg.

Northside (1-5) had the ball first and punched in Hobson's TD to break a 3-3 tie. The Vikings held as Creasy's pickoff ended the game.

Field goals by Northside's Jeremy Theis and Blacksburg's Will Matthews in the second half were the only points in regulation.

The Bruins (1-5) suffered three tough injuries as running back Josh Sales (broken leg), quarterback Daniel Smith (broken jaw) and running back Joe Turley (ankle) left the game in the first quarter.

Daniel Ray, Steve Henderson and Corenzo Gamble ran for touchdowns as the Bulldogs opened their Piedmont District schedule with a win in Dry Fork.

Martinsville (2-3, 1-0) spotted Tunstall a 6-0 lead on a 53-yard run by Stewart Robertson.

The Bulldogs, playing without starting quarterback Quan Beamer (bruised liver), answered with Ray's 10-yard TD and two-point conversion run for an 8-0 halftime lead.

Ray finished with 141 yards on 20 carries.

Haylen Murphy gained 255 yards and scored twice on 21 carries as the Eagles handed the Warriors their fourth straight loss in Danville.

Murphy had TD runs of 7 and 36 yards as GW (5-1) opened a 30-0 lead.

Jonathan Williams had a short touchdown run and threw a TD pass to Matt Duffy for Magna Vista (0-4).

Tinsley threw for touchdown passes of 67 and 5 yards while rushing for a 45-yard score for Amherst County (6-0, 2-0).

Staunton River (0-6, 0-2) was held to just 100 total yards of offense for the game.
