Giles wins golf title

Radford's Zeke Shaffer takes low honors

MIDLOTHIAN — Youth was all the rage at the Group A golf championships at Independence Golf Club on Tuesday.

Radford High School sophomore Zeke Shaffer won the individual championship with a two-day score of 1-under 143, five strokes ahead of James River freshman Korey Watts, who finished in second place.

Giles won its first team championship since 2002 with a score of 622, followed by Galax (636) in second and Chatham (643) in third.

Shaffer, who won the Region C title two weeks ago, was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par. He had a 2-under 70 on Tuesday.

“It felt real good, had six birdies,” Shaffer said of Tuesday’s round. “Four bogies, but still felt real great. “The weather was a lot nicer and then I was putting real well. I birdied all the par-5s on the back, so that helped.”

Shaffer took third in last year’s state tournament.

Watts and Shaffer were tied for the lead after Monday’s round, but Watts’ 75 on the second day wasn’t enough to keep up.

Watts said he didn’t think he played as well as he could have but acknowledged he should have a few more shots at a Group A title.

“Yeah, hopefully I’ll get it one of these” years, he said.

As for the team championship, Giles rode a strong effort from the first day and continued it on Tuesday with a team score of 308.

“This is a tough golf course, a very tough golf course,” Giles coach W.R. Johnston said. “I was really, really proud of our guys to be able to shoot that here.”

And Giles needed a good second-round score because Galax put the pressure on with a strong effort, carding a 313 on Day 2. Giles golfer Tanner Carbaugh took fifth overall. he was the second-to-last person to finish for his team. He said he was aware of the pressure during his round.

“I knew Galax is a tough team to beat,” he said. “Just held it together down the stretch.”

Giles shot a 314 on Monday, which was good for a nine-shot lead over Galax.

Trevor Myers was happy the Spartans were able to hold on.

“We could have done a lot better, but I’m glad we just pulled it out,” he said.

The defending champion Maroon Tide was disappointed with the way things worked out.

“[Before] the first day, everybody kinda thought we already won, so we kinda thought we’d just get here and shoot whatever and still win,” Galax’s Brock Cox said. “Turned out that wasn’t the case.

“We had to play our game and we didn’t.”

The lone senior on Galax, Kyle Schaeffer, had to agree.

“We definitely thought that we could win — this morning, leaving yesterday, that’s all we talked about,” he said. “All we had to do is play a little bit better. Giles played better than us.”

Wes Fletcher of Virginia High took third place individually after beating Chilhowie’s Conner Hayden in a playoff. Both had compiled a two-round total of 150.
