Brewbaker fizzles on last amateur day

Well, there was one upside about Fielding Brewbaker's loss in Wednesday afternoon's first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur men's golf championship at Southern Hills Country Club.

The good news? His father, Jim, wasn't forced to go shopping Wednesday night in Tulsa, Okla.

"My dad didn't bring enough underwear," Fielding said, laughing.

"So we were going to have to going to have to buy some more underwear for dad if I had made it past [Wednesday]."

Playing his worst golf of the week, Brewbaker made only one birdie to go with six bogeys and a match-ending double bogey on the 17th hole, losing 3 and 1 to teenager Marcel Puyat of the Philippines.

"Playing like that isn't going to get you very far anywhere," said Brewbaker, a 22-year-old Salem native. "I just didn't play very well, unfortunately. I just never got it going. I just kinda stayed in a little lull all day."

Despite bogeying three of the first four holes, Brewbaker led 3-up as Puyat played the stretch in 6-over. Brewbaker made his only birdie on the ninth hole to take a 2-up lead at the turn.

Puyat, 17, who finished 10th in the Scott Robertson Memorial in May, then birdied Nos. 10 and 11 to square the match.

Puyat won the 12th with a par, then birdied No. 13 to go 2-up.

The match ended on the 17th hole when Brewbaker had to take a drop from a hazard and wound up making his only double bogey of the week.

"I kinda butchered it there," said Brewbaker, a Hidden Valley member who won the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame title in June.

"Oh, well, I had a lot of fun. We're coming home [today]. It will be nice to get back and play somewhere you can make birdies pretty easily.

"I turn pro [today]. So if somebody wants to schedule a lesson with me, they can. I'll be teaching for some spending money, but I going to be playing a lot.

"I'm going to try and do some mini-tour stuff this winner, and will probably do [PGA Tour] Q-school [in December]."
