Brewbaker advances to
U.S. Amateur match play

TULSA, Okla. — Playing in his final amateur event before he turns professional this fall, Salem’s Fielding Brewbaker fired a second straight 3-over-par 73 Tuesday to make the low 64 in 36-hole qualifying and advance to today’s first round of match play at Southern Hills Country Club.

Brewbaker’s 36-hole total of 146 left him tied for 34th in the 312-player field. Tim Jackson, 50, a two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, was the qualifying medalist at 140.

“This is my first time in the U.S. Amateur and I’m enjoying it so far,” said Brewbaker, who won the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame title by seven shots in June. “It’s great to make it to match play and you never know what can happen.”

Brewbaker won’t know his first-round opponent until after 27 players who tied on the cut number of 148 play off for the final four spots of match play this morning. UVa sophomore Ben Kohles hot a second-round 75 and is among those involved in the massive playoff.

Former Virginia Tech standout Drew Weaver (76) missed the cut by one shot at 149. Ridgeway’s Adam Webb (74) finished at 152; Fincastle native and Tech junior Marshall Bailey (75) shot 154; and Radford University’s Brixton Albert (78) shot 162.

Three other UVa players — Will Collins (75-152), Mac McLaughlin (81-157) and Amory Davis (87-159) — and Cavs assistant coach Jay Fisher (76-153) also are headed home.
