Brewbaker, Griffin, Mondy advance in State Am

SUFFOLK -- Salem's Fielding Brewbaker and the Blacksburg duo of Lanto Griffin and Jake Mondy are among the last eight competitors still standing in the 96th VSGA State Amateur men's golf championship.

Brewbaker, who graduated last month from James Madison University, downed Fairfax's Scott Marino, 3 and 2, in Thursday's second round of match play to advance to today's quarterfinals at Cedar Point Country Club.

Brewbaker, 22, who rolled to a seven-stroke romp in the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame men's championship 12 days ago, will face defending champion and No. 2 seed Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach in this morning's quarters. Paolini, who is headed to Duke on scholarship this fall, advanced with a pair of stress-free victories Thursday, including a 3-and-2 decision over two-time champion Keith Decker of Martinsville in the opening round.

Griffin, who was the Colonial Athletic Association's player of the year this past season as a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University, eliminated qualifying medalist and Virginia Tech-bound Mikey Moyers, 2-up, in the second round. Griffin won Nos. 14 and 15 to square the match, then drained a sharp-breaking 20-foot birdie putt at the 17th hole to take a 1-up lead.

On the final hole, he recovered from a bad tee shot with a brilliant 3-iron approach over a group of pine trees to hit the green. He two-putted from the back edge of the green to complete a rally in which he won four of the final five holes.

Griffin, who advanced to the semifinals last year, will face 2007 champion Pat Tallent, a 55-year-old Viena native, in this morning's quarterfinals.

Mondy, a rising junior at Blacksburg High School, birdied five of the final six holes to clip Richmond's Jordan Utley, 2-up, in the second round. Mondy, the youngest remaining player in the field at 16, holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish the match. Mondy will meet Virginia Tech junior Garland Green in this morning's quarters.

This morning's four winners will advance to the afternoon semifinals. The 36-hole final is Saturday.
