Weaver: It was awesome

The former Hokie golfer, who finished the U.S. Open at 9-over 289, says it was a memorable experience.

Drew Weaver had planned to play in an amateur golf tournament in Rhode Island later this week.

He has changed his mind.

The former Virginia Tech standout is exhausted, and has decided to take the rest of the week off after concluding play in the U.S. Open on Monday.

"This has been one of the longer weeks I've ever had on the golf course," Weaver said in a phone interview.

Weaver shot a 4-over 74 in the final round at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y. He shot the same score in the third round.

Weaver, who shot a 1-under 69 in the first round and a 2-over 72 in the second round, finished tied for 40th place with a 9-over 289. He was one of only three amateurs to make the cut; Nick Taylor was the low amateur at 288.

"I would've liked to finish as the low amateur, but I played my heart out," said Weaver, who concluded his Tech career last month. "It's definitely been memorable.

"To play that well on a stage that big is great. To finally make a cut and be able to bypass the first stage of Q-School, I could go on for a long time about all the great things I'll be able to take from this week.

"I'm glad I was able to prove that I've got what it takes. ... I'm definitely ahead of where most normal recent college graduate golfers would be."

The High Point, N.C., native helped Tech win an ACC title in 2007, the same year he won the British Amateur. He played in the 2007 British Open and the 2008 Masters.

Now his resume includes five days of U.S. Open golf.

"Right behind winning the British Amateur, this is about as good as it gets," he said.

Weaver played the first nine holes of his final round Sunday night, and was 2-over. He began play Monday on No. 1, and had two bogeys and no birdies in his final nine holes.

"The golf course played much more difficult" Monday, he said. "I played very well the first couple days, and the conditions were definitely a lot easier. We had this north wind the last two days; it affects how all the holes play. ... When this north wind came, all the holes that were really long, like the long par-4s and long par-3s, played into the wind."

He was paired with Jim Furyk for the final round.

"He gave me a lot of really good advice for the future," Weaver said. "It was awesome."
