Local golf roundup for July 23
Hudgins wins Haley
MONETA — David Hudgins of Franklin County shot a 1-over-par 72 in the second round to overtake first-round leader Jack Wilkes and win the Andrew Haley Memorial/Smith Mountain Lake Lions junior golf tournament at the Waterfront Country Club.
Hudgins finished with a two-round total of 145 in the 16-18 division, two strokes better than Scott Obershein, Jack Adkins and Wilkes.
Brad Elder won the 14-15 age division with a 144. Zachary Bauchou shot 138 to win the 11-13 division.
Ellenbogen moves on to match play
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Blacksburg's Courtney Ellenbogen shot a 1-over-par 72 in the second round of the USGA Girls' Junior Amateur for a two-day total of 7-over 149 and reached the match-play portion of the tournament.
Ellenbogen, seeded 46th overall, will play Sue Kim of Canada in this morning's first round. The winner will move on to this afternoon's second round at the Hartford Golf Club.
Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas, was the medalist and is the top seed.
Virginias team leads
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. —The 24-golfer Virginias team halved their Carolinas counterparts in day 2 four-ball matches and won a 3712-2812 lead entering the final round of the 52nd Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Longwood sophomore Kameron Carter (Bassett) teamed with Boodie McGurn (Richmond) to halve their match. Natalie Easterly (Richmond) and Jessica Hollandsworth (Floyd) shut out their opponent for a 3-0 win.
Dot Bolling (Salem) and her partner Nicolle Flood-Sawczyszyn (Morgantown, W.Va.) fell 2-1. Fran Hensley (Ridgeway) and Jackie Bascter (Virginia Beach) lost 3-0. Misha Harvey (Forest) and Sherry Bowman (Manassas) also lost, 2-1.
