Wilkes in VSGA Junior Match Play semis
CHARLOTTESVILLE — Two first-time event participants and the defending champion were among four golfers to advance to today’s semifinals as match play got underway at the 18th VSGA Junior Match Play Championship at Birdwood Golf Course.
The championship’s lowest seed Jack Wilkes, 16, of Roanoke and a rising junior at Cave Spring meets Bryce Chalkley, 15, of Richmond. Meanwhile, defending champion Michael Moyers, 17, of Stanardsville takes on Williamsburg’s Trevor Times, who at 14 years old is the youngest remaining player in the field.
The event’s scheduled 18-hole final is also set for today.
Wilkes defeated top-seed Evan Beck (Virginia Beach) 2 and 1 in the first round and Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond) in 19 holes in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Ball ousted Jack Adkins (Martinsville) 4 and 3.
Floyd’s Michael Wade fell to Chalkley 4 and 3 in the first round.
Marino leads AT&T National by a stroke
BETHESDA, Md. — Steve Marino used to consider it a treat the few times he played Congressional as a teenager. It was a thrill Thursday to play bogey-free in the first round of the AT&T National and shoot 5-under 65 for a one-shot lead.
Marino, who grew up a half-hour away in Fairfax, Va., birdied three of his opening four holes, never had a par putt longer than 5 feet and finished off his round with an 8-foot birdie to be in the lead after any round for only the second time in his career.
Former Virginia Tech golfer Johnson Wagner carded a 70, while current Hokie Drew Weaver shot a 75.
