Thursday, May 08, 2008School first for EllenbogenGo to classes at Blacksburg High School on Friday, then pound hundreds of golf balls on Saturday and Sunday at Blacksburg Country Club. That was Courtney Ellenbogen's original itinerary. Suddenly, Ellenbogen's list of things to do for the weekend has been transformed from mundane work to basically dancing with the stars of women's golf. "I like this script much better," a laughing Ellenbogen said Wednesday. After gaining entry into one of the LPGA's most elite fields by shooting a 3-under 69 in a qualifier Monday, the 17-year-old junior is stoked about teeing it up in today's first round of the Michelob Ultra Open at in Williamsburg. Ellenbogen, the only amateur in a field that includes 47 of the LPGA Tour's top-50 money-winners this season, will be paired with tour regulars Janice Moodie of Scotland and Shi Hyun Ahn of Korea in the first two rounds. The trio goes off the No. 1 tee at 2:11 p.m. today. The group tees off the 10th tee at 8:21 a.m. in Friday's second round. While the rest of the field spent Wednesday playing a final practice round for the tournament, Ellenbogen was in Blacksburg, taking a calculus exam in the morning and hitting balls in the afternoon . "Just the amount of school I've missed [to play golf], I had to go to school this week, I guess, to pass the grade," snickered Ellenbogen, a longtime straight-A student. Ellenbogen and her father, Bill, made the 270-mile drive back to Williamsburg Wednesday evening. Her goal is to make the 36-hole cut. "I feel confident in my game that I can put up some good numbers," said Ellenbogen, the nation's 10th-ranked junior girls' player. "I just want to put up two really good scores that I'm happy with." |
