After further evaluation of last Monday’s Conference 31 golf championship at Botetourt Golf & Swim Club, tournament director Chuck Pound of Lord Botetourt ruled a controversial two-shot penalty assessed to Rockbridge County senior Mason Grist for practicing his putting after finishing out a hole was erroneous.
Wildcats coach David Miller said Sunday that rule 7.2 in the VHSL rulebook couldn’t be applied in the situation because it was a “local ruling” and therefore was not automatically applicable. As a result, Miller said he agreed with William Byrd coach Kevin Tuck that the Terriers, who won a one-hole playoff for the team title, should keep the conference champion’s trophy with both teams being listed as co-champions in the record book.
The two teams are scheduled to compete again today in the 3A West regional at the club along with Hidden Valley and Cave Spring, the two team entries from Conference 32, plus other area teams.
