MONETA -- Rocky Mount's Kolton Cooper fired an even-par 71 Monday to grab a share the first-round lead in the featured boys 16-18 age division at the Andrew Haley Memorial/Smith Mountain Lake Lions junior golf tournament at The Waterfront.
Cooper, a recent Franklin County High School graduate who hopes to play on Roanoke College's golf team this fall, is tied with South Boston's Peter Gasperini heading into today's final round of the 36-hole tournament at Mariners Landing.
Martinsville's Wesley Smith is two shots back in third. Roanoke's Nick Brediger and Joey Gasperini of South Boston are tied for fourth at 75.
Roanoke's Derrick Chocklett and Lynchburg's Connor Burgess each shot 73 to head the boys' 14-15 division. Huddleston's Isaac Simmons carded a 70 to take a six-shot lead in the boys 11-13 class.
North Carolinian Shannon Paylor shot 83 to lead the girls' 15-18 division. Troutville's Alisa Caraballo leads Roanoke's Leisa Jayde Dudley in the girls 11-14 division.
