KILMARNOCK -- The eight-player Virginia squad won three of four-ball matches to take a 3-1 lead in Saturday's first round of the 15th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls Team Matches at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club.
Floyd's Amanda Hollandsworth and Troutville's Lyndsey Hunnell downed Caroline Quamme of Washington, D.C. and Micca Thomas of Bowie, Md., 2 and 1.
Blacksburg's Katie Turk and Salem's Kristin Hearp lost 4 and 3 to Killian Casson of Ellicott City, Md., and Mary Bryan Owen of Baltimore in the final match.
The event concludes today with eight singles matches. The Virginia team, which is coached by Salem's Marilyn Bussey, holds a commanding 12-1-1 edge in the series.
