Defense carries Generals on road

WASHINGTON -- Playing its first game without injured quarterback Hunter Dawkins, Washington and Lee thrived with defense, holding Catholic to minus-28 rushing yards in a 28-0 ODAC win, its first shutout since the teams met two years ago.

Sophomore running back Stuart Sitterson led the Generals (4-1, 2-0) with 187 all-purpose yards and two touchdown passes.

W&L held Catholic (3-2, 1-1) to 100 yards, recovered two fumbles and had five sacks. Junior cornerback Mark Snoddy grabbed two interceptions.

Freshman R.J. Varner, filling in at quarterback with Dawkins sidelined by a broken collarbone, was 17-of-28 for 177 yards and an interception.

Sitterson hit Varner with a 17-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and hit Jack Martin from 3 yards out in the third for a 14-0 lead.

Maryville 20, Ferrum 14

FERRUM -- Maryville pulled ahead early in the third quarter and clamped down, holding Ferrum to zero points and 88 yards in the second half.

Quarterback Jermaine Pitts and the Panthers (1-4, 1-2 USA South) were slowed for the second straight game, rushing for 145 yards on 34 carries.

Maryville (3-3, 2-1) took advantage of first-half fumbles by Pitts and Jacob Hawkins (60 rushing yards) and opened the second half with a nine-play, 65-yard drive.

Rommel Hightower, who gave the Scots 111 yards on 24 carries, capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

New Hampshire 27, Richmond 17

DURHAM, N.H. -- David Ball supplanted Jerry Rice as the career record-holder in Division I-AA with his 51st touchdown reception and New Hampshire scored on one of its four forced turnovers.

Ball caught nine passes for 60 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown from Ricky Santos in the third quarter, breaking the tie with the former Mississippi Valley State star and certain NFL Hall of Famer. At the time, the play pulled the Wildcats to 14-13.

New Hampshire (5-0, 2-0 Atlantic 10) went ahead to stay when B.J. Ross forced a fumble and Muji Karim grabbed the loose ball and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown.

The Spiders (4-1, 1-1) pulled to 20-17 on Andrew Howard's 26-yard field goal with 12:23 to play, but Santos hit Evan Loring with an 8-yard TD pass to seal the win.

James Madison 35, Rhode Island 23

HARRISONBURG -- Justin Rascati threw two touchdown passes and Eugene Holloman gave James Madison the lead with a 64-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter as the Dukes prevailed on a sloppy field.

Holloman, who finished with 142 yards on 20 carries, scored on the second play of a 73-yard drive with 10:29 to play. James Madison (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic 10) clinched the game with 1:46 left when Kevin Winston returned a fumble 28 yards for a touchdown.

Rhode Island (2-3, 0-2) had taken a 23-21 lead with 5:31 left in the third quarter on quarterback Derek Cassidy's third short touchdown run of the game.

Rascati completed 7 of 9 passes for 102 yards, including touchdowns of 26 yards to D.D. Boxley and 28 yards to Ardon Bransford, the latter giving the Dukes a 21-16 lead.

Massachusetts 48, William and Mary 7

AMHERST, Mass. -- Steve Baylark ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns while Tony Nelson added 69 yards and three scoring runs as Massachusetts won its third in a row.

Baylark scored on runs of 23 and 6 yards in the first quarter, and Nelson scored on runs of 4 and 5 yards in the second quarter as the Minutemen (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic 10) took a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Tribe (1-4, 0-3) averted the shutout late in the third period on a 35-yard pass from Mike Potts to Joe Nicholas. Potts finished 27 of 50 for 244 yards.

Hampton 42, Central St. 12

INDIANAPOLIS -- Calvin Bannister returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown and Henti Baird blocked a punt to set up another score as Hampton beat Central State of Ohio in the 23rd annual Circle City Classic.

Marquay McDaniel caught three touchdown passes for the Pirates (6-0), who spent most of the game working on their passing game.

Hampton, ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division I-AA poll, led 14-0 after the first quarter en route to its 23rd consecutive regular-season victory.

Hampton's Alonzo Coleman, who needed 143 yards to break the MEAC career record of 4,142 rushing yards set by former Howard star Harvey Reed, gained just 42 on nine carries.

West Virginia State 17, Southern Virginia 14

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Reginald Robinson and Kevin O'Brien ran for touchdowns in the second half as West Virginia State picked up its second win.

Southern Virginia (1-6) had a 14-3 lead at halftime after Hayes Page threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to McKay Dunn and Jawa Hendricks returned an interception 45 yards for a score.

The Knights ran for only 49 yards but got 215 yards on 16-of-29 passing from Jared King.

Hampden-Sydney 24, Emory & Henry 21

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY -- Josh Simpson scored on a trio of 2-yard runs, Grant Hall kicked a 22-yard field goal and Hampden-Sydney grabbed an ODAC win.

The Tigers (2-3, 2-1) got a 32-yard punt return from Aaron Williams early in the fourth quarter that set up Simpson's final score of the day.

Emory & Henry (2-3, 0-1) lost its conference opener despite two touchdown passes from Todd Woods to Brennan Stewart.

Woods was 11-of-17 for 150 yards, including four catches for a game-high 100 yards by Stewart. Matt Gillespie led the Wasps with 95 yards on 23 carries.

Averett 28, Methodist 25

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Trailing 25-21 late in the fourth quarter, Todd Parsons led Averett down the field for a 61-yard scoring drive, which Kyle Wilson capped with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Methodist (2-3, 0-2 USA South) aided the Cougars (3-2, 2-0) with penalties on that drive, starting with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the kickoff. Another 15 yards were marked off on a roughing-the-passer call. A second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty came after Wilson ran for 17 yards on a fourth-and-1 play and led to the game-winning score one play later.

South Carolina State 47, Norfolk State 10

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- DeShawn Baker ran for 128 yards and scored twice, and William Ford added two touchdown runs to lead host South Carolina State to its sixth straight win over Norfolk State.

NN Apprentice 21, Morrisville State 13

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Two second-half blocked kicks and a key defensive stand late in the fourth quarter proved to be the deciding factors for Newport News Apprentice (3-2).

Bruce Freeman was the leading rusher on the day with 93 yards on 23 carries. He now holds the Apprentice career carries record with 629.

NEWPORT NEWS -- Christopher Newport won a rainy slugfest that featured six fumbles and six interceptions.

Lambuth 47, UVa-Wise 43

WISE -- Josh Garza found Ryan Harris from 27 yards with 17 seconds left to lift Lambuth to a road victory.

Elizabeth City State 27, Virginia State 0

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- Vikings quarterback Curtis Rich passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more and Virginia State (0-6, 0-3 CIAA) lost three turnovers.
