Coach K: J.J. 'far behind'
Mike Krzyzewski said J.J. Redick would have had every chance to earn a position on the U.S. team.
Mike Krzyzewski wishes J.J. Redick were well enough to play in the USA Basketball tryouts in Las Vegas next week, but he understands why he can't.
Redick, a former Cave Spring and Duke star, disclosed Tuesday that the herniated disk in his back will prevent him from auditioning for the U.S. national team that will compete in the World Championships in Japan next month. He was one of 23 players named to the U.S. roster in March.
Krzyzewski, the U.S. and Duke coach, said Thursday that Redick is "far behind" the other players because of his injury-related layoff.
"He hasn't been playing for five weeks. You can't crash train a guy," Krzyzewski said on a teleconference. "It'd be stupid to do that."
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and other NBA stars will compete in a training camp July 19-25 at UNLV. Redick, who was drafted by the Orlando Magic last month, will observe the first three days of practice.
Krzyzewski said it will be useful for Redick to be there. Redick and the other players will also try out in two years for the Olympic team. Having the same U.S. roster for more than one year is a new approach for USA Basketball.
"This has never been done before; this is part of a program. It's not just having a [2006] team," Krzyzewski said. "It's an ongoing program."
Krzyzewski said Redick definitely could have made the World Championships team and wasn't just on the roster with an eye toward the 2008 Olympics.
Redick and Adam Morrison are the only NBA rookies on the roster, which grew to 24 players with the addition of Kirk Hinrich on Wednesday. Greg Oden, the national high school player of the year who will be a freshman at Ohio State next season, was invited Thursday to observe the first few days of practice. Oden, who isn't on the roster, recently had wrist surgery.
"Oden was more added for the future, just because we think he's going to be great," Krzyzewski said. "J.J. and Adam Morrison were not picked for the future. They were picked for right now. It's unfortunate J.J. hasn't been able to play for over a month."
USA Basketball announced Thursday that Paul Pierce, who will have elbow surgery next month, won't be competing in the camp. USA Basketball also announced that Lamar Odom, whose son recently died, won't attend the camp.
Two stars who will be playing at the camp have opted not to be considered for the World Championships team. Michael Redd is getting married next month, and Chauncey Billups' wife is pregnant.
Krzyzewski will trim the roster to 15 players July 25 and whittle the group to 12 next month for the World Championships. All 24 will be back for the 2008 tryouts, and others, like Oden, might be added then.
Redick's chances of starting at off-guard for the Magic next season increased dramatically Thursday. The Associated Press reported Thursday that Orlando has signed guard Keith Bogans and ended its bid to re-sign DeShawn Stevenson, a free agent who started at off-guard last season. The team gave up on trying to sign Stevenson after the sides remained far apart in salary negotiations, according to the AP.
