Tech’s Castlin 2nd
at NCAA championships


Virginia Tech’s Kristi Castlin finished in second place in the final of the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA outdoor championships Saturday.


Castlin finished in 13.15 seconds. Michigan’s Tiffany Ofili won the event for the third straight year with a time of 12.96.


Virginia’s Yemi Ayeni was fourth in the men’s discus finals (191 feet, 1 inch).


UVa’s Caitlin Kelly was fourth in the women’s discus finals (168-10), with UVa’s Billie-Jo Grant sixth (165-7) and Tech’s Brittany Pryor 11th (155-6).


UVa’s Morgane Gay was 10th in the final of the women’s 1,500 meters (4 minutes, 19.59 seconds).


The Virginia Tech women tied for 12th in the final  team standings with 18 points — their best finish ever at the outdoor meet. UVa tied for 36th.


Tech finished 16th in the men’s standings. UVa tied for 48th.


Justin Oliver held on for second place as the anchor in the 1,600-meter relay, giving Texas A&M the men’s team title. Texas A&M also won the women’s title, becoming the first school since 1990 to win both outdoor championships.


Late Friday, Tech’s Yavgeniy Olhovsky finished fourth in the pole vault finals (17-6 1/2). Fellow Hokie Hunter Hall was 10th (17-2 3/4).


Earning All-America honors at the four-day meet were seven Hokies — Castlin, Pryor (in the hammer throw), Olhovsky, Hall, Marcel Lomnicky, Dorotea Habazin and Asia Washington; six Cavs — Ayeni, Kelly, Grant, Gay, Stephanie Garcia and Meghan Briggs; VMI’s Donnie Cowart; and Arkansas’ Catherine White (Northside).


The five UVa women honored set a program record for the most female All-Americans in a single season. Grant became UVa’s first four-time All-American in a single event, while Gay became the first UVa freshman woman to be an All-American in the outdoor season. Ayeni became the UVa men’s first three-time All-American in a single event.


Cowart (men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase) became VMI’s first All-American  in the outdoor season in 20 years.

Harris to speak


Duke sports radio play-by-play announcer Bob Harris will be the guest speaker Monday at the Roanoke Valley Sports Club meeting at the Hidden Valley Country Club.


Harris received the Marvin “Skeeter” Francis Award from the ACC in March for his service to the league. He has been with the Duke radio network for 34 years.
