Dove in contention

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Jonathan Dove of Collinsville shot a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for eighth place after the first day of stroke-play qualifying for the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship.

Michael Wade of Floyd shot a 77, as did Jack Adkins of Martinsville and Jack Wilkes of Roanoke.

Salem not picked

ESPN has announced its 20 finalists for “TitleTown USA,” and Salem is not among them.

Salem had hoped to be picked, but it lost out to the likes of New York City; Boston; Williamsport, Pa; Parkersburg, W.Va.; and Chapel Hill, N.C.
