Youngsters take over State Am
WILLIAMSBURG -- The youth movement is officially in full swing at the VSGA State Amateur.
Of the eight golfers to advance to today's quarterfinals, seven are ages 22-and-under as the first and second rounds of match play concluded at the 95th VSGA Amateur Championship at Kingsmill Resort & Spa's River Course.
In the top half of the bracket, 20-year-olds Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg) and Tazewell's Garland Green, a rising sophomore at Virginia Tech, each advanced and will meet today.
In the bottom portion of the bracket, Virginia Beach resident Brinson Paolini, 17, takes on 20-year-old Vincent Nadeau (Penhook) in a quarterfinal match.
Nadeau knocked off two-time winner Keith Decker (Martinsville) 2 up, the only former event champion to make match play, in the second round.
Nick Little (Crozet), a senior on the Radford University team this past season, bested medalist Daniel Hurley in the first round, but fell to Griffin. Hampton Ballard (Pearisburg) beat Dustin Groves (Keswick), but was routed by Paolini 7 and 6 in the second round.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are today and the scheduled 36-hole championship match is Saturday.
Ex-Blue Devil wins Dye
FAIRLAWN -- Ryan Blaum, the 2006 ACC champion from Duke, fired a bogey-free, 2-under-par 70 in Friday's final round to capture the inaugural Pete Dye Classic Tarheel Tour event at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.
Tied going to the 54th and final hole, Blaum ripped a long drive and knocked his approach shot on the difficult 495-yard par-4 hole to 35 feet. He routinely two-putted for a par to edge Scotland's Joel Hendry, who bogeyed the final hole after pulling his drive left into the deep rough.
Blaum finished with a 54-hole total of 8-under 208 on the Dye design that was stretched to its back markers of 7,665 yards for the final round. Blaum, who finished 15th in the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, earned $16,000 for his second win in two starts on the Tarheel Tour. He won last year in Salisbury, N.C.
Radford's Ryan Sypniewski, who played at Virginia Tech, had a final-round 80 and finished in a tie for 40th among the 49 players making the 36-hole cut. Sypniewski earned $650.
Wilkes medalist in qualifying for Junior Am
Roanoke's Jack Wilkes fired a 2-under 69 to claim medalist honors in zone qualifying at Roanoke Country Club for the 56th VSGA State Junior Amateur.
Wilkes, the reigning men's club champion at Hunting Hills Country Club, was one of eight players who qualified for the event that will be held July 29-31 at Blacksburg Country Club.
Blacksburg's Jake Mondy was second with a 70. Roanokers David Hudgins and Matt Harman, and Salem's Parker Davis, all shot 73 to earn berths. The final two spots in the field were claimed by Conner Walters and Kory Watts, who each shot 77.
