Promoted all-star returns to Salem

Jimmy Van Ostrand is back with the Salem Avalanche, and a new catcher is coming with him.

Van Ostrand was called up to Double-A Corpus Christi shortly after making the Carolina League all-star team, but was reinstated to the Avalanche roster so he could play in Tuesday's game.

At the time, Avalanche manager Jim Pankovits was unsure if Van Ostrand would be back to stay, but he said Wednesday that Van Ostrand will return when Salem gets back to work today after the all-star break.

Van Ostrand ranks sixth in the Carolina League with a .304 average. He hit .190 in nine games with Corpus Christi.

In addition to Van Ostrand, the Avalanche is adding catcher James Goethals to the roster, an addition that Pankovits said will be a "great fit" as the season wears on for starter Koby Clemens, who is in his first stint as a catcher.

"He'll be a great complement to Koby," Pankovits said.

Goethals, who hails from San Mateo, Calif., and is three weeks shy of his 26th birthday. He has played sparingly in three seasons in the Houston Astros organization and has spent this spring as the bullpen catcher in Triple-A Round Rock.

The Avalanche released catcher Justin Tellam, who'd hit .195 in 26 games this season, his second as a backup in Salem. Salem also put reliever Chad Wagler (2-0, 0.00) on the injured reserved list.
