TENNIS

W&L back in final


SAINT PETER, Minn. — The top-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team tied its program record for wins in a season with 28 and advanced to the NCAA Division III championship match for the fourth straight year with a 5-1 victory over Denison.

Kelly Will, Meg Saplitta and Lauren Caire notched straight-set victories. The Generals will face Williams in the title match at 1 p.m. today.

GOLF

Kasza in 6th

WAVERLY, Iowa — Hollins golfer Vicki Kasza shot a second straight 4-over 76 and sits in sixth place at the midway point of the NCAA Division III women’s golf championships at Centennial Country Club.

She is six back of leader Susan Martin of Methodist. 

James in 6th

Braselton, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee men’s golf team carded a second-round score of 31-over 315 and is in 22nd place out of 35 teams at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Chateau Elan Resort.

The Generals have a two-day score of 638 and trail team leader St. John Fisher by 42 strokes. Individually, senior Nathaniel James leads the Generals is tied for sixth overall out of 180 competitors after posting a two-day score of 5-over 147. James trails leader Scott Harris of St. John Fisherby eight strokes.

Robertson field set

Spencer Lawson of Raleigh, N.C., fired a 3-under 69 at Roanoke Country Club on Wednesday and joined high school teammate Jonathan Hammond (73) as the final two boys’ qualifiers for the Scott Robertson Memorial tournament.

Hammond was two shots clear of the rest of the 25-player field, which was vying for two spots. Brian Langley of Blacksburg shot a 75 and John Michael King of Roanoke carded a 79. Ben Firebaugh of Roanoke (84) and Tyler Chocklett of Roanoke (85) also missed the cut.

Three girls competed for the final two girls’ slots, with Courtney McKim (79) of Raleigh, N.C., and Jacqueline Calamaro (82) of Newton Square, Pa., earning their way into the featured event, which begins Friday at RCC.

Baseball

Longwood 6, VMI 4

LEXINGTON — Jake Yocum went 3-for-4 and scored twice as the Lancers (23-26-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on.
Sam Roberts had four hits to lead the Keydets (26-24).

Softball
Locals honored
Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher and third baseman Charisse Mariconda were named first-team All-Northwest Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Tech outfielder Jenna Rhodes and Radford pitcher Ashley Taylor were named to the  second team.

Football
W&L books flight to France for 2009
LEXINGTON — Washington and Lee’s football team plans to travel France to play against a semi-pro team in June 2009.
Coach Frank Miriello says his team will use its travel abroad and game against the Paris Flash to build team cohesion while also learning about American, French and European history to earn course credit.

The school says the nine-day trip also will include visits to Paris, the cemeteries at the D-Day beaches and countryside mansions.

Washington & Lee has begun fundraising efforts to help pay for the trip, with offensive lineman Greg Kurkis among three committee chairmen.
