Sullivan shoots 77
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ashley Plantation pro Chip Sullivan shot a 5-over-par 77 at the PGA Tour’s Wachovia Championship on Thursday.
Only nine golfers have a worse score.
AUTO RACING
New scoreboard for
Martinsville Speedway
Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell announced more than $2 million in improvements to the track, including a new, 120-foot-tall scoreboard.
Also, pit road will be resurfaced; a SAFER barrier will be added at the fourth-turn pit game; and a row of portable chairs will be replaced with stadium seats.

Recruits spurn Virginia
Two high school players who had made official recruiting visits to Virginia announced commitments to other schools.
Wesley Witherspoon from Lilburn, Ga., chose Memphis and Paul McCoy from Portland, Ore., picked SMU.

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Elizabeth Webb of Washington and Lee took fifth in the 1,500 meters at the Liberty Twilight meet in a school-record time of 4:37.9, qualifying for the NCAA Division III championships.

VMI’s Kevin Hill has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference offensive player of the year.
