MEN’S LACROSSE


W&L loses ODAC semi


LEXINGTON — Maicin Dunk scored with 2:31 remaining to give third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan a 13-12 win over second-seeded and 19th-ranked Washington and Lee in an ODAC semifinal Wednesday.


It was the 11-6 Marlins’ first win over W&L (9-6) in 18 tries.


The winning goal occurred after Marlins goalie Tom Skartsiaris stopped two point-blank shots to keep the score tied at 12.


COLLEGE BASEBALL


VMI 8, Virginia Tech 7


LEXINGTON — Rhett Ballard walked Shane Geisslinger with the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Keydets the win.


Tech (18-27) had scored three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the score at 7, with VMI transfer Klint Reed’s sacrifice fly tying it up.


Sam Roberts had two hits and two RBIs for VMI (23-22). Matt Hacker had four hits and scored twice for the Hokies.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL


VMI signs 2 recruits


LEXINGTON — VMI coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of 6-foot-7 power forward Wayne Whiting Jr. of Benedictine High School in Richmond and 6-3 guard Keith Gabriel of United Faith School in Charlotte, N.C.


Whiting averaged 10.4 points and 6.8 rebounds this year. Gabriel averaged 17 points.


Fasnacht honored


Former Glenvar star Allyson Fasnacht has received Liberty University’s highest athletic honor, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award, for her athletic and academic accomplishments and community service.


GOLF


Sullivan in Wachovia


Daleville’s Chip Sullivan is in the field for the PGA Tour’s Wachovia Championship this week in Charlotte, N.C

.
The Ashley Plantation head professional will be playing in his fourth tour event of the season. Sullivan has made the cut in his last two starts.


Sullivan is paired with tour rookie Kevin Streelman of Duke and Australian Matt Jones in the first two rounds. The trio will be the final group starting on the 10th tee at 2:10 p.m. today at Quail Hollow Country Club. The threesome will tee off at 9 a.m. Friday on the first tee.


TENNIS


3 Generals reap bids


Washington and Lee’s Katie Tabb, Kelly Will and Lauren Caire have received bids as individuals to the NCAA Division III women’s championships.


All three will compete in the singles championships, while Tabb and Caire also got a bid as a doubles team.


Area players receive
Division I men’s berths


Virginia’s Somdev Devvarman, Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot have received bids as individuals to the NCAA Division I men’s championships.

All three will compete in the singles tournament, while Devvarman and Huey are the top-seeded team in the doubles championships.


The singles field also includes Virginia Tech’s Albert Larregola and Radford’s Martin Sayer.


Devvarman, the defending champ, is the No. 1 seed in the singles.


SWIMMING


McGlaston reaps grant


W&L senior Tim McGlaston has been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The nine-time All-American will attend Harvard medical school in the fall.


AUTO RACING


FCS changes schedule


Franklin County Speedway has moved this weekend’s race from Saturday to 5 p.m. Sunday.
