Sports in brief: Tincher, Drew Weaver, Waugh

NEW YORK -- Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow picked up another honor Tuesday when he won the Sullivan Award, which is presented by the AAU to the amateur athlete of the year.

Virginia Tech pitcher and James River graduate Angela Tincher, one of five finalists for the award, attended the banquet at the New York Athletic Club. The 2007 All-American led Division I in ERA (0.56) last year.

She did pick up a lesser honor Tuesday, when she was named Division I co-player of the week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in the wake of her no-hitter against the U.S. Olympic team.

The other Sullivan finalists were Michigan State hockey goalie Jeff Lerg, Oklahoma gymnast Jonathan Horton and Philippa Raschker, a 61-year-old track-and-field athlete.

Tech's Weaver loses in Georgia

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Virginia Tech junior Drew Weaver lost 2 and 1 to Colt Knost at the Georgia Cup, the 11th annual match between the reigning champs of the British Amateur and U.S. Amateur.

Knost, 22, is an SMU graduate who won the 2007 U.S. Amateur and is now on the Nationwide Tour.

Weaver went 1-up when he birdied the 11th hole at The Golf Club of Georgia. But Knost evened the match when Weaver three-putted the 12th. Knost went 1-up when Weaver bogeyed the 13th. Weaver three-putted on the 16th to fall 2-down.

It was the first time two Americans squared off in the event. It also was the first time a pro competed.

Weaver will play in The Masters next week.

Waugh wins national award

Katrina Waugh, the baseball and women's basketball writer for The Roanoke Times placed fourth in special projects for the 40,000-100,000 circulation division in the Associated Press Sports Editors contest.

Waugh's award came for her series "Work in Progress," which focused on the Salem Avalanche's role as part of the Houston Astros' minor-league operation.

Also, columnist Aaron McFarling received honorable mention for a breaking news story he reported on the Seattle Mariners' decision to field an Appalachian League club this summer in Pulaski.
