Redick's brother has tumor

Former Cave Spring football, basketball and baseball player David Redick, the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard J.J. Redick, has a tumor.

The former Marshall football player will have surgery today at Duke University Medical Center to remove a tumor on his spine, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

J.J. Redick, a former Cave Spring and Duke basketball star, will miss the Magic's game against Atlanta tonight to be with his brother, the newspaper said.

"He's a little freaked out," J.J. Redick told the newpaper. "I'm taking a couple days to be with him and the family."

J.J. Redick said his brother underwent tests afer feeling numbness in a calf.

"We thought he had a herniated disk," he told the Sentinel. "It ended up being more than that."

SOFTBALL

Virginia Tech 7, Cal State Northridge 1

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Angela Tincher tied the school record for career victories as Virginia Tech defeated Cal State Northridge at the Long Beach State Invitational.

Tincher entered the game in the first inning with the game tied 1-1 and went the final 6 13 innings to pick up her 93rd career win, tying Ashlee Dobbe for the record. Tincher (W, 8-4) didn't allow a hit while walking four and striking out 15.

Charisse Mariconda had two hits and three RBI, while Erin Ota had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for the Hokies.

BASEBALL

N.C. State 4, Virginia 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Four N.C. State pitchers combined on a four-hitter, and Dallas Poulk led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a tiebreaking home run to give the Wolfpack (8-3, 2-1 ACC) a 4-2 victory over Virginia (11-2, 1-2).

UVa starter Andrew Carraway (2-1) worked the first six innings, allowed three runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out seven.

Ga. Tech 2, Virginia Tech 1

ATLANTA -- Jeff Rowland had three hits and Zach Von Tersch picked up his second win of the season as No. 19 Georgia Tech (12-1, 3-0 ACC) completed a sweep of Virginia Tech (7-6, 0-3).

Ty Hohman collected two of the Hokies' six hits in the game.

Methodist 6, Ferrum 2

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Eric Harrell, Justin Franklin, Dustin Howell and D.J. Phillips had two hits apiece, but the Panthers (4-5, 2-2) fell to Methodist (13-6, 3-1).

Radford 4-4, Seton Hall 3-7

RADFORD -- Radford's Mario Duarte singled home Nick Minter with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Highlanders a victory in the first game of a doubleheader with Seton Hall.

Auburn 6, VMI 5

AUBURN, Ala.-- Tanner Biagini continued his season-long hitting streak with a 3-for-4 game, scoring a pair of runs for the Keydets (4-7) in a loss to Auburn (10-4).

W&L 6-1, Virginia Wesleyan 5-11

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Sophomore first baseman Hunter Serenbetz's RBI single in the top of the 16th inning enabled the Generals to win in the first game.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Roanoke 14, St. Mary's 6

Roanoke College (2-1) went up 6-1 after the first quarter and never looked back as the Maroons defeated St. Mary's (2-3).

Matt Quinton scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Maroons.

TRACK

VMI relay team 2nd

BOSTON -- The VMI distance medley relay team of Anthony Harris, Jared Balsor, Felix Kitur and Donnie Cowart sprinted past Providence and Georgetown in the last 20 meters, propelling the Keydets to a second-place finish at the IC4A Championships.

The VMI time of 9:50.65 is a Big South Conference record, and comes within two seconds of the VMI mark that was set in 1984.

WRESTLING

Tech's Epperly wins ACC title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Virginia Tech's Matt Epperly, a former Christiansburg grappler, was voted the ACC tournament's most valuable wrestler after upsetting the top three seeds en route to his championship at 165 pounds on Saturday.

Maryland claimed its first conference tournament title since 1973. The Terps edged Virginia by two points.

Virginia wrestlers won two individual championships. Ross Gitomer started the championship round with an 8-3 decision in the 125-pound title match. Rocco Caponiwon a 7-2 decision to win the 184-pound title.

VMI heavyweight Wine gains SoCon title

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Freshman Josh Wine became VMI's first Southern Conference heavyweight champion in nine years at the SoCon Championship on Saturday.

Chattanooga won five weight classes on their way to 104.5 points, beating out Appalachian State (86.5) and UNC Greensboro (71.5) for the team title. Rounding out the scoring were The Citadel (30.5), VMI (26) and Davidson (24.5).
