Sports briefs: RU volleyball falls
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Seventh-seeded Radford lost to second-seeded UNC Asheville 32-30, 30-28, 30-23 in the first round of the Big South volleyball tournament.
The Highlanders closed coach Crystal Poskey's first season with a 9-19 record, the program's best mark since the 24-win 2001 season. Radford equaled the most conference wins since 2002 with four.
W&L women's soccer to play Washington
The Washington and Lee women's soccer team will travel to Virginia Beach to take on Washington (Mo.) at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Division III round of 16, the NCAA announced. The winner will play the winner of Elizabethtown and Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.

Notes: Virginia Intermont, and NAIA program, is coming off a 88-58 thumping at the hands of the Cumberland Monday. The Cobras have been led in scoring by Courtney White, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard, who has averaged 18.8 points per game. ... An unexpected long-range scoring threat has emerged for the Keydets in senior guard Fred Robinson, who has buried 13 3-pointers in three games after sinking only 16 all of last year. ... Keydets forward Reggie Williams scored a career-high 36 points in a 104-86 victory over South Dakota State in the BCA Classic last weekend as the Keydets salvaged the third of three tournament games. ... Post Justin Jarman and point guard Sean Christiansen are not playing pending outcome of Honor Court proceedings against them next week.

Roanoke Times sportswriters Doug Doughty, Randy King and Aaron McFarling will join WDBJ-TV's Mike Stevens as the guest speakers at Monday's Roanoke Valley Sports Club meeting.
