Generals hold off Catholic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sally Allstadt tied the game with 1:37 left and Mary Stewart Malone scored the game-winner just 47 seconds later for Roanoke College.

Tech pentathlete
earns All-America honors
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Saskia Triesscheijn gained All-America honors at the NCAA indoor championships by finishing sixth among 17 competitors in the pentathlon.
Roanoke sprinters shine
LEXINGTON - Roanoke College's Cassandra Williams and Alexis Thompson shared meet MVP honors in the Washington and Lee Invitational.
Williams won the 100 with a time of 13.12 seconds and was second in the 200, while Thompson was first in the 200 at 27.21 and runner-up in the 100. Both sprinters were also part of the Maroons' 400 relay team, which took first in 51.95.
Meredith Withers was first in the 400 hurdles (1:10.0) for Roanoke.
W&L's Meredith Walker won the long jump (16-2 1/2 ) and was fifth in the 200.
The Roanoke women placed second in the nine-team meet to Division II West Virginia Wesleyan. The W&L women tied for fifth.
The W&L men, led by Nathan Johnson who was named athlete of the meet, finished fifth. The Rockbridge County graduate won the 800 (2:00.66) and 1,500 (4:04.54). Andrew Fischer won the javelin (145-8). The W.Va. Wesleyan men won the meet.
The Roanoke men finished sixth and were led by Garrett Cosenz, who was second in the 400 (50.42) and fourth in the 200 (23.26).
SOFTBALL
Radford splits
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Ashley Taylor hit a grand slam during a nine-run third inning as Radford defeated St. Joseph's 10-2 to earn a split at the Florida State Invitational.
Radford (16-13) fell to No.20 Florida State 4-0 in the first game.
Lara Wohlgemuth was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the win to equal Suzie Rath for most career hits with 192.

ASHLAND, Va. - The Generals (16-2, 4-0) ran their winning streak to 14 games by sweeping the Yellow Jackets (4-6, 0-2).
Taylor McConnell went 2-for-3 with a grandslam in the first-game victory. Zach Bausch went 3-for-4 in both games and had a home run in the nightcap.
Chowan 10, Ferrum 5
FERRUM - Chowan (5-5-1) erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning to down the Panthers.
Brett Thomas was 3-for-5 with two RBI for Ferrum (10-3-1).
Auburn 12-5, VMI 0-4
AUBURN, Ala. - Josh Sullivan tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while fanning a career-high nine batters as the Tigers (14-5) defeated VMI on Saturday.
Robert Crumpler went 2-for-3 for VMI (8-9).
The Tigers scored the game-winning run on a pinch-hit single by Bruce Edwards in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday.
Matt Smith went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI for the Keydets.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Josh Alley hit two homers and Eli Iorg added one for the Volunteers (13-3), who won their 10th game in a row to tie for the longest current streak in NCAA Division I.
Kellen Wohlford went 3-for-4 with a RBI and scored two runs for the Highlanders (2-10).
Snow cancels rest
of Tech-UNC series
BLACKSBURG - The remaining two games of Virginia Tech's ACC series with North Carolina have been canceled because of snow and wet playing conditions at English Field.
The 11th-ranked Tar Heels (11-3, 1-0 ACC) won the first game of the series 11-3 on Friday. Virginia Tech (6-5, 1-3) entertains Liberty on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
