College sports: Virginia Tech rallies to tie Duke in men’s soccer

DURHAM, N.C. - Virginia Tech goalkeeper Kyle Renfro saved a penalty kick in the 78th minute and Robert Alberti scored with less than two minutes left in regulation and the Hokies (2-1-1. 1-0-1 ACC) forged a 1-1 draw with Duke in men's soccer on Friday..

Sebastien Ibeagha scored for Duke (2-1-2, 0-1-1) in the fourth minute to give the Blue Devils the lead for nearly the entire match.

MEN'S SOCCER

No. 15 Wake Forest 3, Virginia 2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Cavaliers (1-3, 0-2 ACC) trailed 3-0 55 minutes into the match, but put on a furious rally.

Luca Gimenez, Michael Gamble and Sean Okoli all scored for Wake Forest (3-1, 2-0).

Eric Bird scored in the 83rd minute for UVa, and Bryan Lima scored five minutes later to draw Virginia to within a goal. A header from Jordan Allen with less than a minute left was saved by Deacons' goalkeeper Alec Ferrell to preserve the win for Wake Forest.

MEN'S TENNIS

Hokies advance at Southern Intercollegiate

ATHENS, Ga. - Hokies' tennis players advanced in four singles matches and a doubles match on the opening day of the Southern Intercollegiate at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia.

Hunter Koontz took a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Jack Williams of Charlotte to advance to the round of 32 against Georgia's Nick Wood in Division I singles. Aaron Gomez and Florian Nicoud won singles matches in the Division II fligh and Rafael Ribas won in the Division III flight.

Joao Monteiro and Nicoud also won in the Division I doubles flight. Play resumes this morning.

Sayer and O'Keefe advance at Duke Fab Four

CARY, N.C. - Radford's Nicholas Sayer and Patrick O'Keefe (Salem) defeated Duke's Cale Hammond and Josh Levine to highlight the first day's action at the Fab Four Invitational at Cary Tennis Park.

The pair then lost 8-4 to Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez of South Florida, so they will play Fred Saba and Raphael Hemmeler this morning in the third-place match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

NJIT 1, VMI 0

NEWARK, N.J. - Rebecca Tustin scored in the sixth minute and NJIT made the goal stick for the rest of the match it defeated the Keydets.

NJIT (2-5) and the Keydets (2-4) combined for 25 fouls.

Radford 6, Southern Virginia 0

RADFORD - Jazmin Sampson scored twice as the Highlanders stayed unbeaten.

Radford (4-0-1) also got goals from Sydney Golden, Julie Ruh'E, Micaela Filsoof and Britney Kendall.

MaKenzie Cox made five saves for Southern Virginia (1-3).
