CHARLOTTESVILLE - The 20th-ranked Virginia men's soccer team handled 19th-ranked St. John's on Sunday, defeating the Red Storm 2-0.
The Cavaliers (1-1) scored in the 28th minute when Brian James knocked a deflection into the back of the net. Jordan Allen solidified the win with a steal and a 15 yard goal on a breakaway in the 82nd minute.
St. John's was unable to find the net all day long and falls to 1-1 on the season.
Virginia opens the ACC season with a visit to Clemson on Friday.
MEN'S SOCCER
West Virginia 2, Radford 2
MORGANTOWN, WVa. - The Highlanders battled back to draw with West Virginia at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (1-0-1) led early when sophomore Jamie Merriam finished a feed from senior Craig Stephens in the 12th minute.
Radford (0-1-1) responded in the 58th minute after left-footer Bernardo Ulmo scored from ten yards out to tie the game at one.
West Virginia regained the lead three minutes later as Majed Osman bent a shot in from 22 yards out.
Garland Smith tied the game in the 77th minute after the ball bounced off the goalpost.
The only save of the game was recorded in the 102nd minute by Mountaineer keeper Lee Johnston.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Howard 2, VMI 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A late penalty kick sealed the victory for the Bison as they defeated the Keydets.
Howard (1-1-1) scored in the 28th minute when Kelsi Bobbitt ripped a shot into the back of the net.
VMI (0-3) had many chances throughout the game as Nicole Blixt placed a header into the arms of the Bison keeper.
Howard finished the game with a penalty-kick in the 77th minute from Treschelle Gibson-Serrette.
Keydet keeper Liz Nickerson had two saves on the day after entering the game in the 52nd minute.
VMI returns home to play South Carolina State on Friday.
