Bath County graduate Jailyn Ford of James Madison has been named both the state's Division I softball pitcher of the year and the rookie of the year.
Ford, who helped JMU make the NCAA tournament, went 24-6 with a 1.51 ERA and 209 strikeouts. At the plate, the freshman hit .373 with 15 homers and 49 RBIs. She broke 18 JMU records.
JMU's Mickey Dean, formerly the coach at Radford University, was named the coach of the year by the sports information directors of the state's colleges,
Ford was joined on the all-state first team by Virginia Tech's Kylie McGoldrick and Lauren Gaskill and Virginia's Marcy Bowdren and Melanie Mitchell.
TRACK AND FIELD
ACC chooses Kruzliak
Virginia Tech's Tomas Kruzliak has been named both the freshman of the year and the field performer of the year for ACC men's outdoor track and field. He is the first man to win both awards.
He won the NCAA title in the hammer throw last week.
GOLF
Vincent, Corcoran cited
Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent has been named the state Division I male player of the year.
He was joined on the all-state first team by Tech's Mikey Moyers, UVa's Denny McCarthy and Radford's Weston Eklund.
On the small college side, W&L's Teddy Corcoran was named the male rookie of the year.
On the women's side, UVa's Brittany Altomare was named player of the year.
BASEBALL
Henderlite honored
Lord Botetourt graduate Martin Henderlite of Lynchburg College has been named to the small college all-state first team.
Henderlite, who was 8-2 with a 1.12 ERA, was recently named a second-team Division III All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
He was joined on the all-state first team by Ferrum's Wes Walker, W&L's Alex Maragos and Southern Virginia's Mitch Stevenson.
LACROSSE
Lachlan recognized
Roanoke College's Richard Lachlan has been named the state small-college men's player of the year.
He was joined on the all-state first team by Roanoke's Charles Peace and W&L's Joe LaSala, Andrew Fusselbaugh and Mac Means.
On the women's side, the first team included W&L's Leanne Stone, Ferrum's Brooke Hewartson and Roanoke's Darragh Evarts and Allison Bonanno.
