Virginia, Tech athletes honored for academics

Virginia rower Sarah Cowburn, who has a 3.95 GPA, has been named a first-team Academic All-American.

Virginia Tech diver Ryan Hawkins and UVa wrestler Matt Snyder were named to the third team for the second straight year.

Christiansburg grad to play for Div. II Tusculum

Former Christiansburg standout Zach Davis' decision to pay to play basketball at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham seems to have paid off.

Wednesday the 6-foot-3 Davis accepted a partial scholarship to play for Division II Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn.

Davis made first-team All-Group AA and first-team All-Timesland andwhile helping leading the Blue Demons to the 2012 Group AA Division 4 title. However, Davis received no scholarship offers following his senior year.

Davis said part of his decision to attend Hargrave was to work at making the move from playing center to small forward or shooting guard and he believes it worked.

"I got a full year's work of guard skills and drills. It just really helped me transition, just being in the gym everyday," Davis said.
