TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Kylie McGoldrick had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs to help sixth-seeded Virginia Tech beat third-seeded Maryland 8-5 in an ACC softball quarterfinal Thursday.

The Hokies (35-18) will face second-seeded North Carolina State (31-18-1) in a semifinal at 1 p.m. today.

Tech's Courtney Liddle had an RBI triple, scored twice and tied a tournament record with three walks.

Down 8-5, Maryland (31-26) loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. But Maggie Tyler entered the game and got out of the jam. She pitched two hitless innings for the save.

SOFTBALL

N.C. State 7, UVa 0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Emily Weiman pitched a three-hitter and Renada Davis belted two homers to lead the Wolfpack to a win over the seventh-seeded Cavaliers (21-28) in an ACC quarterfinal.

Winthrop 4, Radford 1

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Melanie Andrea and Chelsea Schoenfeldt homered to lead the fifth-seeded and host Eagles (26-27) to a win over the fourth-seeded Highlanders (20-35) on the first day of the Big South tournament.

Emily Naegle homered for Radford.

Radford will face top-seeded Coastal Carolina in an elimination game at 9 a.m. today.

Also on the Radford front, pitcher Rachael Walters made the All-Big South first team. Morgan Eye made the second team. Walters, Naegle, Casey Burns and Becky Mantel made the all-freshman team. Ryndee Ruch made the all-academic team.

BASKETBALL

Green invited to NBA combine

Virginia Tech's Erick Green has been invited to the NBA draft combine, which will be held May 13-19 in Chicago.

Green said he will skip Tech's commencement ceremonies next week because of the combine. He was one of 60 draft prospects who were invited to the combine.

William Fleming graduate Troy Daniels of VCU was not invited to the combine. But he will be one of about 40 players who will work out for NBA teams May 22-23 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

MEN'S TENNIS

N.C. Wesleyan 5, W&L 3

ATLANTA - The 23rd-ranked Battling Bishops (15-9) beat the 21st-ranked Generals (18-6) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament at Emory University.

WOMEN'S GOLF

UVa in 14th at NCAA regional

AUBURN, Ala. - Virginia is tied for 14th place after the first round of the NCAA East Regional championships.

The 13th-ranked Cavaliers shot a 12-over 300 on the first day of the three-day tournament. The top eight teams in the 24-team field will advance to the national championships.

MEN'S LACROSSE

W&L reaps home game

Washington and Lee will get to stay home for the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Generals learned Thursday that they will get to host defending NCAA champ Salisbury at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Roanoke's second-round home game with Lynchburg will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

General, Maroon honored

W&L's Leanne Stone and Roanoke's Darragh Evarts have been named to the All-America third team.
