Aaron McFarling and Dick Howard of Salem should both be a little more respectful and show some class - if that is possible, especially Mr. Howard (sports mailbag, March 20).
If they desire to make fun of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and the team, fine. A lot of us banter good naturedly among our friends, family and others about teams we like or dislike. But what is this about hating teams and coaches? How classy is that?
I don't even hate Virginia Tech, but I do get tired of hearing about them way too much whether they succeed or fail.
I live in Vinton and have been a Duke and Coach K fan for many years. I am also a die-hard UVa and coach Tony Bennett fan. I do not like the North Carolina Tar Heels and love to see them lose - the same goes for Virginia Tech.
However, I do not hate them. I respect and admire their coaches and players. Most of them respect each other as exemplified by coach Bennett's comments saying Coach K's words had validity. All of these coaches and players have more character and class than either McFarling or Howard have in their little fingers.
Oh yeah, Mr. Howard, why do you feel so bitter about Yankees? The Civil War has been over for a long time. Could it be your low self-esteem, and you are not as learned as you think Robert Cramer is?
No, I am not a Yankee, I was born and raised in the Roanoke area.
Letter critical of columnist was on target
I completely agree with Mr. Cramer's letter (sports mailbag, March 20). I, too am surprised that you printed the March 17 Aaron McFarling column.
You can do better. I personally will not read McFarling's column anymore.
