Sports minute: Christiansburg players commit to Charleston
Thursday, March 7, 2013
Christiansburg’s one-two football punch of De’Quan Green-Gause and Joey Augustin will be perpetuated next year at the University of Charleston.
Demons coach Tim Cromer reported that Augustin, a first-team All-Timesland selection as a utility player, will sign Friday in a ceremony at Christiansburg.
Green-Gause signed with the West Virginia college in February.
Augustin is in his third year of high school, and Charleston wanted to make sure he could graduate in time to enroll for the fall.
Augustin came to Christiansburg from Miami in the eighth grade and it was later discovered that he had been held back in an earlier grade. His 19th birthday falls this summer, only days before the cutoff that would have enabled him to play for the Demons in 2013.
“This is something we had known for a while,” Cromer said. “I don’t think it affected his recruiting. More than anything, we had so much talent [in 2011] with kids like Brenden Motley and Zach Snell that De’Quan and Joey split time.
“They were role players [as juniors] and when they moved into a showcase role this year, there wasn’t a lot of film of them.”
A 6-foot-3, 171-pounder, Augustin was named River Ridge District defensive player of the year and also played running back and quarterback. He rushed for 1,396 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, also seeing time as a return specialist.<
